the jokes about hythlodaeus being emet's "dead wife" get a chuckle or two from me, but i do worry that's like. all that he Is to people. he's a guy who gets framed as Important to Emet but his characterization and what it says about Ancient society is something i love seeing more

okay hi yeah i talked about it some
okay so starting with serene’s temperament first as a base; the whole thing is in general in the present they are relatively chill, they like to make light jokes and can express warm excitement about things and all in all have a friendliness to them. beyond this is a searing fire, the unnervingly blazing zeal and joy that does largely make itself known in combat but it can also be glimpsed when they are cooking or are deep deep into a project of some sort. an absolute drive. anger can feature like this too, but to an extent. They aren’t what I consider to be hotheaded though perhaps hotblooded in some ways, and usually where their roaring rage is seen is when it’s to do with a situation of injustice. But I don’t count that as the height of their anger, because when they are utterly furious all that heat quenches and suddenly becomes cold. It’s such a rare rare thing to witness them being cold because honestly they feel like they lose their Self and find it hard to return later. Because I have to drag volcanoes into it I will – they are definitely meant to reflect the anticipation of eruption and the full send devastation that comes when it does happen but for the most part it won’t. But the contrasting flip very much exists, a very very cold cavernous abyss like all the magma has crystallised and sits unmoving. Next I talk about how I see emotion affecting their magic, namely that passion greatly increases the potency of what they do to the point where things could get out of control if they aren’t careful. While the focus of their weapon can channel the spell I always think of spellcasting still being a very physical affair which requires control on thought and movement both. Nowwww I gotta go to some formative stuff in their adolescence, two people are uh. I mean basically raised them at the time but the core details of a lot of that requires cws and I’m always careful to not randomly discuss it in public so as to be sensitive. Anyway one trained them as a warrior to hone their focus on the ‘inner beast’ and manipulate that flame within to their advantage, and she always presented herself as warm and comfortable and charismatic. On the other hand their teacher in magic was…charismatic in a wry way, but in general was coolheaded and calculated and specifically strict. Serene’s magic at the time was sort of a souped up thaumaturgy, as consuming aether strengthened the spellwork and they learned pared down incantations but never did the whole ass thing since they didn’t have a black mage crystal (their teacher did though but that’s a diiifferent story). He sharpened their skill to a wicked edge, it’s still all the foundation of what they do today as even now they recall that sense of cold control to enable precision. his impact isn’t as loud but it’s there seeping through especially in their moments of cruelty. And in that sense they still sometimes struggle in indulging how they like to be dominant in intimate moments because it tends to reflect him! The other link to polarity and flipping from warm to cold can be seen in their ‘all or nothing’ attitude, the way they take risks, the way they can default to black and white thinking especially pertaining to personal matters!
