It’s here! Just unboxed the proof of Lessons in Low-Tech! Holding it makes all the work feel real. This book is about designing smarter, simpler, and more sustainable. Can’t wait to get it into people’s hands. What’s one Low-Tech design you love?🌍 #LowTech #SustainableDesign #AcademicSky #author 💙📚
A printed proof of Lessons in Low-Tech rests on a wooden table, its blue cover featuring white botanical illustrations. Beside it, a kraft notebook, a sharpened yellow pencil, and a white mug filled with coffee create a simple, thoughtful workspace arrangement. The scene is softly lit, evoking a warm and intentional aesthetic. A person holds an open copy of Lessons in Low-Tech, revealing a spread with a large photograph of a craftsman working in a traditional tool shed. The opposite page features a structured layout with the heading "The Three R’s: Reliability, Repairability, Resilience," alongside a radar diagram and module objectives. The book rests on a wooden table, accompanied by a kraft notebook, pencil, and a steaming mug of coffee, creating a quiet moment of engagement with the material.

For 56 minutes Sky News and BBC News interrupted everything else and carried a Reform UK feed live, uninterrupted, unchallenged. The stream spluttered, froze, pixelated - dozens of times - still they stuck with it. FOR ONE HOUR.

This is an editorial choice. No other party gets this coverage. ~AA

After more than a year of disastrous political direction it looks like Labour MPs are finally questioning McSweeney's judgement. Remember - this is the man whose strategy is for Starmer to become a Farage tribute act with no solutions

I am pleased to share that my students’ research on circular economies in design education, co-authored by @keith-colton.bsky.social and me, will be presented at #E&PDE2025 in Malta next week.

Collage of three photos showing plastic waste being shredded, processed, and reformed using yellow workshop recycling equipment in the Materials Intelligence Lab. Hands hold shredded plastic and feed it into an injection moulding machine.

"I’ll get so much done on the train" I tell myself.
Reality check: the file with the embedded video never downloads, the tablet dies halfway there, and my travel mug tastes foul. The September commute is officially back. Solidarity to those chasing deadlines between stations. #AcademicSky #EduSky

It’s been tough to push beyond an outline lately between a journal abstract, a funding application, and a pile of life admin, but revisiting moments like this reminds me why the work matters.

Five participants of the Low-Tech Hackathon in Châlons-en-Champagne play table football on the rooftop terrace at Mess des Entrepreneurs. They are laughing and focused on the game, with drinks and outdoor tables visible in the background.

Pulling together my slide deck for September’s #EPDE conference hosted by the #ied and #thedesignsociety, where I’ll be presenting on the #Low-Tech #Hackathon we ran in Châlons-en-Champagne. This photo captures some of the energy of that event, students gathered around questioning, testing, learning
A group of people stand together in the matériauthèque in Châlons-en-Champagne during the Low-Tech Hackathon. They are gathered around a wooden frame holding dismantled Bird e-scooters, looking closely and discussing. The setting is an industrial warehouse space with concrete walls and scattered furniture in the background.

I didn't either until I'd seen it, not knowing enough about its life cycle I can't comment on how it survives but there it is.

Close to Carbury castle in county Kildare there's quite a few oaks with mistletoe. It seems to do best on the telegraph poles though.

Great to see Plaid Cymru join others demanding Parliament’s immediate recall over Gaza. Accountability cannot wait.

Within the lab we are challenging perceptions around material streams. Our focus is on building material intelligence in students and communities. The Lab is about more than materials, it’s about narratives, resilience, and design practice that connects people and resources differently.

Proud to see the Materials Intelligence Lab featured in TU Dublin’s sustainability news - a space where waste becomes possibility, and design education meets open experimentation.

Best of luck Zack! I just read this article now and while I understand the reticence of the incumbent hierarchy I think the next election could be the most important election in a century. Now is a time for defined actions, not gentle growth.

Oh that's much worse! I hate editing back, I really need to take a long break and come back with fresh eyes or I have no chance.

Sometimes the hardest part of writing isn’t the words, but making space for them. After weeks stuck in routine, I took my notebook outside. A change of place, a patch of sunshine and the thoughts began to untangle. Clarity often comes when we step out of our usual patterns. #EduSky #AcademicSky
A bright green notebook, stuffed with pages of notes, is placed on a wooden table with the words “Saotharlann do Ghníomh Inbhuanaitheacht" in Irish and the English translation: "Sustainability Action Lab” printed in white. Beside it are red, green, and black pens.

Any one of the charges here against the former Sun editor should stop Keir Starmer appointing David Dinsmore.

When you look at them all together - it's an absolute outrage.

So I’m asking: what are you seeing in your spaces – classrooms, museums, libraries, studios? Are there programmes pushing back? Places protecting access to design? Where do we look for hope?

This matters. Design is where systems meet people, where sustainability, engineering, visual culture, and lived experience converge. Losing fluency in design thinking, design making, and design heritage weakens our ability to shape equitable and resilient futures.
