I patch up injured animals, raise orphaned baby critters, & grow a lot of plants. I also think most bugs are cool as hell. https://ko-fi.com/southernflyingsquirrelgirl if you want to help me with animal rescue supplies.

The pure, unadulterated joy I feel watching him go from a bloodied, ripped up wing to being able to do THIS...There's nothing like it. And some area crows are starting to watch us daily & get closer. I'm so excited to see him interact with them & learn crow secrets that I can't impart. #birds

One day in the lab, we accidentally discovered that the spines of a cactus 🌵 straighten when exposed to fog. I was intrigued and so were my collaborators. How does this work and what can be gained from it? Here are some of the answers in our new preprint:

Illustration of a white skull partially obscured by colorful mushrooms and plants. Different fungi sprout from and around the skull, including red mushrooms with white spots, yellow fan-shaped mushrooms, gray cluster mushrooms, and orange bulbous mushrooms, with green and purple plants filling the background. A ribbon at the bottom of the skull reads “ADMIT ONE.”

Here's a pretty good one I got when he was doing his weird neck-sunning thing.
A young crow has his neck craned to the side, and his mouth is wide open. It's pink inside. He has pale gray-blue eyes.

He simply cannot resist the siren's call of Cat Tail. The cat has been so graciously tolerant. #birds CC @banditelli.org

Should elected officials be imprisoned for speaking out against an invasion of their cities? Hard to say. Very technical question. Really one for the lawyers to sort out.

Q: Do you agree that the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois should be in prison?

MIKE JOHNSON: Should they be in prison? I'm not the attorney general. I'm not following the day to day on that

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

Three say they've been shot with pepper balls, sometimes while praying.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...
Religious protesters say ICE threatens religious freedom in Chicago

Sora is not the real problem here. The real problem is that in 12, at most 24 months, there will be a Sora clone from Tencent or Alibaba that is just as good and can be run by anybody with a 5099, at which point everyone in society needs to rapidly agree to treat all digital video as fake, period.

You know what would be a good use of some political C(3) "public education" money? A tariff calculator that allows you to look through a massive catalog of normal consumer goods and show how much tariffs are increasing the price of each.
