The policy effects of congestion pricing - which Toronto and other Canadian cities would struggle with, given the existing transit infrastructure- are just so striking
Particulate pollution in the air down a whopping 22% in NYC’s congestion pricing zone.

Not only are the streets less congested, but so are our lungs.

John Lennon was gunned down 45 years ago today.

It makes no more sense now than it did the night my brother came racing upstairs to tell me what Howard Cosell had just announced.

This is very cool. Can't wait to see it spread to other states.
Today on Volts: I've had more requests to cover this than almost any other topic in the pod's history, so now, at long last, balcony solar! We dig into how "plug-in solar" took off in Europe & how it's making its way to the US, starting in Utah. Backyard DIY types rejoice!
What's the deal with balcony solar?
Cora Stryker joins me to explain how "plug-in" solar took Europe by storm and is finally, via Utah (?), making its way to America.

Doug Ford ordered Ontario public servants back to the office. Now, nearly 11,000 are asking to work from home
The Treasury Board Secretariat said it has been so inundated with "remote work alternative work arrangement" requests that it cannot process them all.

It would not surprise me if the Liberals call an election in 2026. If the opposition parties refuse to help bills get passed through Committee hijinks and other delaying tactics the Liberals could decide to go to Canadians looking for a majority mandate. #Saturdaythoughts.

Seven days after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with federal government, Alberta changes regulations that make the $130 minimum effective carbon credit price harder to achieve

It backs clean process heat — heat pumps, electric boilers, geothermal, solar thermal — with competitive, outcome-based support.

Koh: I think what we are seeing is what the founding fathers feared the most, which is the collapse of our checks and balances. The Supreme court is supposed to be a co-equal branch of government. It's basically a mouthpiece for Donald Trump at this point.

SCOTUS is a joke. Americans need to realize what a partisan body it is. Roberts has done irreparable harm.
just to drive home the point. Texas created this map in August. the lower court rendered its decision November. So three months later, a year before the election in question.
The word "eve" is doing a lot of work here in the Court's 'decision'

What's changed is that the Court has become more transparent in its corruption. There's not even an argument here beyond the implicit one which is: how do you expect us to hold the House without those seats?
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

The three Democratic appointees, in an opinion by Justice Kagan, dissent.

I'll post the ruling shortly.

As Justice Kagan begins her dissent by pointing out, what is even the point of trial, of fact-finding, of clear error, of standards of review, when the Supreme Court simply ignores every single part of that and decides everything purely on the papers without any real consideration of the facts?

Last year there were more wildfires in Canada than ever before - or so it seemed. We are signing up for more of the same.

Hopefully solar and wind will become so cheap we make the switch to clean energy. Politicians need to provide incentives for EV cars.
Of course, but the causation isn't "voters don't care so politicians deprioritize climate", it's "politicians work very hard to convince people that the economy (read: shareholder profits) must be the only urgent focus".
Climate isn’t the ballot question right now.

Only 13% rank it a top concern — meaning big shifts in climate policy can land softly if voters see economic upside.

China continues to press ahead with increasingly impressive (and increasingly affordable) electric vehicles.

The Trump administration is cutting fuel efficiency standards and dreaming about bringing back faux wood-panelling.

The race here is already over.
The shift to EVs is happening—fast. Manufacturers can either embrace the long-term transition or chase short-term gains by clinging to petrol and diesel.

China is choosing the long view. Many in Europe aren’t. The risk? Ending up with cars no one wants, lost market share, and shuttered factories.
