I should have said, no paywall on that article. 🎁

This is just a wonderful piece of writing. If you’re like me, you might not much care about religious art like this, but this brings it to life. The value of an art critic and great writing…

Not really an academic, but that just means that my own research is on the side after hours. And the only way I get anything done is in a writing group or by collaborating with others so that we share the load/ motivate each other/ are letting someone else down if we don't do it.

“He first thought that maybe she had seen a grizzly bear. Instead, Ms. O’Neill had regained cellular service and had seen a flood of text messages with the same news. “You just won the Nobel Prize!” she yelled.” (🎁 article)

“The Hopi were approved for a $25 million grant to install solar panels and battery storage for around 600 homes through a program called Solar for All.
But in August, the Trump administration terminated the Solar for All program, calling it wasteful.” www.npr.org/2025/10/07/n...
A tribe in Arizona planned to connect 600 homes to electricity. Then the funding was cut
The Hopi Tribe received a multimillion-dollar federal grant to install solar panels and battery storage systems for hundreds of homes. But the Trump administration has canceled the funding.

Some memories of fall in southwest Colorado.

I've never actually seen a living crab in the Mystic River before, so I pulled out my phone. It was only later that I realized what was going on-- I'm pretty sure the male crab is carrying an upside down female crab. Crab sexy times, I guess?

Apart from just being an interesting #MaritimeHist read, my Mystic Seaport Museum coworker and Mainsheet editorial board member Walt Ansel is quoted in this article. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/s...

I saw it in 2019, almost by accident, and it was amazing! But clearly I will have to go back and see this new museum and give myself more time.

Todd Arrington is an extraordinary public servant, a really excellent public historian - and a veteran. Superb educator! This was a relatively new posting for him. He didn’t deserve this treatment. I hope he sues the bejesus out of this administration.

“They asked for a sword, and we said, ‘Well, we do have swords, but we can’t give them away because they’re museum artifacts,’” said Todd Arrington, forced to resign as head of Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library.”

Stubby corn. The one on the left is strawberry popcorn grown in the museum’s three sisters garden and that’s what it’s supposed to look like. The others are glass gem corn from my yard that is definitely not full size.
Four little corn cobs. On the left a red one, and the other three have varying combinations of multicolored kernels.

And yes, the new building is definitely going to be blocking my gorgeous river view.

My office has been a front row seat to a fascinating construction project the past few months, and today was really cool. They poured that concrete this morning and then this absolute star showed up and did this all afternoon to smooth it. I’m told it’s called a power trowel which is extra amazing.

Both kinds are Indigenous corn varieties. Aren’t they beautiful? These aren’t the kind of corn you’d eat on the cob— the glass gem is a flint corn for grinding, the strawberry is for popping.

They wanted to give American cultural heritage away to a foreign king, and then they fired the guy who said no. I know there are a million things to be outraged about, but this one needs attention. Does anyone think Kansans want their cultural heritage exported? www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/a...
