In no particular order, here are my top 12 films released in the UK in 2025.

Tough one this year; I saw a ton of new releases and the top 50 were all pretty good. What are you saying?

How time flies. Feels like just yesterday that I was in my thirties.

Night of the Reaper. A horror with a really authentic 80s vibe to it. The final twists start to stretch credibility, but I liked the idea of the victim turning the tables on the killer. 52 popcorns.

Weapons. Loved this. Kids in a small town go missing in mysterious circumstances and then it gets weird. There was a good amount of suspense in the first half and then some brilliant set pieces. Pretty thrilling. 86 popcorns.

Him. Gorgeous to just look at this and while the middle kinda dissipates into nothingness, a decent start and a mental ending help to make up for it. 63 popcorns.

Fantastic Four: First Steps. Set in alternate 1960s, this looks absolutely amazing. A lighter tone than many Marvel movies and better for it. 68 popcorns.

Borderline. So-so comic horror with Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson both doing a good job. The latter plays a delusional stalker of Weaving's 90s-era Madonna-esque popstar. Shows some directorial flair in places but just falls a bit flat with a weak ending. 54 popcorns.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025). Oh boy, this is a real stinker. One of the worst written & badly edited films I've seen in a long time. Just weird. Motivation for the killer is off, what they 'did' wasn't really bad at all! But, anything that puts SMG on TV wins points. 25 popcorns

Oh, Hi! An absurdist take on a romcom, which did make me chuckle quite a few times at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. A small, note-perfect cast. 67 popcorns.

F1. Yeah, enjoyed this one. The story is a cheesefest and pretty formulaic, but the driving scenes were so good. Brad Pitt is effortlesy a star in almost every scene he's in, with patchy support. 77 popcorns.

Ballerina. This John Wick spin-off is a bit messy. It's not overly long, but definitely drags. Ana de Armas is really good in the title role and commits to the fight scenes - which are very well done. But the plot is pretty unoriginal. 53 popcorns.

Opus. Pretty decent, enjoyable psychological horror. Some dark comedy moments. Lots of exposition early on made the pacing of this relatively short film seem a bit off. Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich both smash it though. 68 popcorns.

Nobody 2. Bags of fun and more of the same in this action-comedy sequel. Feels like a few movies have attempted to do something similar, but this works pretty well and better than most. 75 popcorns.

Reptile. Engrossing crime drama/thriller, with plenty of red herrings and things to keep you guessing. Bencio Del Toro is great. Ultimately the film doesn't wrap up all of the questions, but it's pretty good. 74 popcorns.

27 people — including a priest, professor and health workers — were arrested today under terrorism laws.

Their crime? Peacefully holding signs opposing genocide.

This is how we sleepwalk into fascism.

A very good thread. Note, it remains possible that the Courts will refuse to allow Yvette Cooper to proscribe Palestine Action. The High Court on Friday held that there was, in effect, a serious question to be asked about the lawfulness of her decision.
Ahead of the expected proscription of Palestine Action - the first time a protest group has been legally redefined as terrorist - I went through the Hansard of the 2000 Act they're being banned under. Turns out MPs were assured the law wouldn't be applied this way. Thread 🧵🔽

Politics can be complex, but every so often it’s pretty easy to tell which side of history you’re on. For example, if you require the police to arrest elderly ladies for peacefully protesting against genocide, that’ll probably be the wrong side.

Heads of State. Yes, it's dumb and yes, it's predictable. But, I did chuckle a couple of times and it works as a film to switch your brain off to and just enjoy it for what it is. 60 popcorns.

Clown in a Cornfield. Teen slasher doesn't do a huge amount that hadn't been seen already. There is plenty of dark humour and a smattering of enjoyable gore. 53 popcorns.
