while it’s true that a lot more people are going to be able to build their own personalized software, i do not believe that most people are going to *want* to build their own personal software or even have the vision/skill/time to do so effectively
As a software developer who spends his days building a link-saving app and his nights telling everyone that in the very near future people will be able to easily build their own software to solve their personal problems — this is my existential crisis coming to life.

people think that labour is a moral good because all of our moral goods emerged from labour. but the opposite is not true: you are not improving the condition of humanity by punishing yourself with Extra Labour
i think a core beef that i have with a lot of this "automation is bad" sentiment lately is that there is no inherent moral good in laboring

the story of humanity is one of invention, where we improve our conditions by building things that help us do more things more easily
I've been sitting with the discomfort here a bunch, and to me this is it, right? What is being suggested is that I engage in an act of self-flagellation (resolving thousands of lines of merge conflicts by hand) because the richest man in the world uses some of the same underlying tech to peddle CSAM

macos dock icons in dark mode generate such potent mental angst in me: what are you, dim grey Blocks, you gross & utterly un-Lickable things, you Hateful Squircles: i just wanted to know whether Reminders was open

the real debate is “spaces around emdash” vs “no spaces around emdash”
i’m team em dashes for life

the actual tell of most AI content is just that it doesn’t have anything to say and is boring to read

people who can’t tell good writing from bad writing by content shouldn’t have any sway over how we write
I write my posts myself, not with AI. I had to take all the em dashes out because I was too worried people would think it AI generated 😔

i like go because it makes me feel like a serious developer, but holy smokes some of these functions are longer than ernest hemingway’s seminal 1952 novella “The Old Man and the Sea”

i bought the domain ohhh.lol a while back just because and the other night i noticed it gets like 100-150 unique hits a day from people typing it in their posts and group chats where it tries to load the url preview. so i hope this annoys some people while they're trying to get their mack on

we have a wifi-enabled kettle; it is not connected to the wifi & we use it like a regular kettle

The big regression
My folks are in town visiting us for a couple months so we rented them a house nearby. It’s new construction. No one has lived in it yet. It’s amped up with state of the art systems. You know, the one...

well, it's a new year, which means that it's time to pretend that i have the mental bandwidth to write a "week in review" post every seven days for the next 52 weeks:

nuremberg (2025): they made a marvel movie about the holocaust, and then cut to live footage of the holocaust for 10 minutes right in the middle. not serious movie 2/5 stars

+ some other stuff i've watched while sick & burntout @ the end of the year

TV & film at the end of the year
Watching a bunch of tv because I'm tuckered out and I just want to lie on the sofa and have someone tell me a story.

I reached out to the author of this viral Reddit post thinking there might be a story in it. He sent me an employee badge that Gemini flagged as being AI-generated and supporting documents that I suspect were also generated by AI. Be careful out there folks!
