A semi-realistic illustration of a young black woman with a guitar slung across her back, holding a microphone. An enthusiastic crowd is illustrated below her. A stylised illustration of a tall, cyclopean person in a suit, reaching down and taking placards from protestors while simultaneously making an imperfect copy before holding this copy up to a trio of people with media devices for heads, floating above everything in a cloud. A comic page of a young woman being surprised by the appearance of a powerfully-built, wild-looking woman with flam-red hair and rough hide clothing. A comic page of a Chinese monk being led through a forest by a maiden, who hears the keening wail of hunting demons before the monk does.

Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.

Know what's kept me going through this week? Knowing that I'm getting to see my pals tomorrow night. Just hanging onto that.

Kick-started my freelance illustration career. I was complimentary on the work done by @theferret.scot and they asked me to illustrate some excellent, hard-hitting articles for them. That gave me a body of work and contacts. I'll always be grateful to them for the opportunity.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Heads up for anyone who might be coming to my casual launch shindig at Reilly's NYC today: Barnes & Noble has already sold through their stock, and I'll only have about 10 copies on hand, so if you have a book already and you'd like it signed, please bring it!

Speaking as a Birmingham native, Bessemer ain’t nothing but black folks — and I find it oh so interesting that black neighborhoods are where they keep shoving all these data centers
chadstanton.blacksky.app
I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that all these data centers are going into communities that have been historically targeted for exploitation and have the least amount of civic power wielded by the people living there.

Why Are Plans for This Alabama Data Center So Hush-Hush?
Officials in Bessemer, Alabama, are mum on Project Marvel, a proposed data center the size of 18 Walmart Supercenters.

That's exactly what works: It's vibes, the show. It feels like after hours in an exclusive club.

I didn't think I'd get into Dropout's Dirty Laundry, but it hits SO many spots so well. It's gossipy, it's raunchy, it's scandalous, Lily is a great host and has wonderfully extra outfits, Grant's drinks are fascinating, the music choice fits the vibe so well.

Yeesh, that's.......... That's alarming.

A black and white comic page depicting a woman washing dishes in an eerie way with a bruised eye. The final panel reveals a man tied up at her feet. An illustration of a red-haired woman holding up a sheet of paper that's burning. A comic page showing a woman vomiting black tar into another woman's mouth An illustration of a woman sat on a fancy couch in a dark room. She's looking creepily into the camera as if she's expected you

Y'know what, this has really made me wish I'd paid more attention in Modern Studies. I feel like it was talked down as being "a bit trendy", etc, and I think I bought into it a bit at the time, and now that I think about it I could have learned so much more from it.

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Ugh, that sounds like a nightmare, I'm sorry they run things like that.

Now, I would be able to tank redundancy myself, but I can't imagine the worry that must go through folks' minds every year. People with mortgages and families and stuff.

Hopefully at least the promotion comes with a reasonable salary bump for the added responsibility - but yeah, it's been demoralising seeing colleagues, people I've worked with for years, become friends with, disappear.

Meeting that I was dreading actually went very well, which was a relief, and probably also indicates I should look at the sheet of exercises my therapist gave me........

I haven't even gotten to what's probably going to be my worst call of the day and I'm already exhausted. Nothing takes it out of you like thinking you've done a good job, and then finding out there's one very tiny but critical edge case that now needs to be solved and your tools won't allow for it.

They're a smidge more expensive than normal plasters but they promote healing and they're a wee bit cushioned as well, all in all, a fab thing to have around.
