For the time-being, many of the political news stories I share will have comments closed. I want to continue to share the stories as a service and FYI to other news junkies here but don't want negative energy in my comments right now. Apologies and thanks for understanding.

Yes, Trump did seem friendlier this visit.

“One of the chants that has become ubiquitous at these protests at Broadview is, ‘Love your neighbor, love your God, save your soul and quit your job,’” said Black, who pastors at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago. “Everybody chants that.”

What buying access to the American market means in practice:

"The legislation has come under attack from US oil and gas companies, with ExxonMobil’s chief executive Darren Woods describing the rules as threatening."

Bowing to bullies would only make a bad situation worse
"A panoply of laws forcing companies to fight deforestation, labour abuses and reduce their impact on the environment are being weakened or delayed, and the US is pushing Brussels to go further."

I’ll be blunt: Mark Carney has demonstrated a shocking lack of understanding of AI policy & the varied issues it raises. We have years of real-world examples (Robodebt in Aus eg) & scholarship that he‘s completely ignoring in his treatment of AI/data like a natural resource to be exploited.

To non-experts, speed and decisiveness can seem like expertise and wisdom. They’re not.
What I know about AI regulation tells me that his decisiveness & speed are masking an ignorance/neglect of basic policy issues that should concern all Canadians.

Carney’s reckless approach to AI policy should raise serious questions about his infrastructure & US policies as well. In all three, he seems to be relying on his own (non-expert) judgment, ignoring complexity & others’ expertise in favour of speed. But decisiveness isn’t the same as good judgment.

“Dominic LeBlanc seemed to suggest Tuesday … that Ottawa is prepared to trade away tariff relief for “a partnership in terms of energy” with the United States.”
Call it what it is: Deeper integration. Closer ties. Less independence. With an unreliable partner that no longer respects the rule of law.
Althia Raj: Mark Carney, Donald Trump put on a show of affection in Oval Office trade talks, but no real progress announced
The Liberals won the last election on one premise — Canada strong, a country less dependent on the United States, in terms of its security and its economy. But early signs from Tuesday’s White House v...

I read a lot of adult adoptee pieces on it. They offered invaluable perspectives.

I remember that case. I followed it closely at the time. What an agonizing situation. Every now and again, I think of her and wonder how she's doing.

I don't know if it's mentioned in the podcast that John Roberts is an adoptive parent, but, yeah, he is and I think it makes it even cloudier.

Thank you so much, friend. I think I'm doing about the same as everyone else. What a difficult time this is. Some days are just tougher than others but I am okay. I hope you are too. ❤️

“But there are more areas where we are stronger together, and that’s what we’re focused on.”

The problem: "Stronger together" rests on the premise Trump views Canada as a partner, and not as a vulnerable, dependent + resource-rich neighbor it can dominate.

Totally.

I think suffering *shows* your character, it does not necessarily build it.

Covid-19 pandemic is the best example of that. If suffering inherently creates empathy and builds your moral character, then we should all be thriving now after so much suffering and isolation AND YET...

In connection w/your point, do you not find it a pernicious myth that suffering is ennobling & 'makes you a better person'? That can happen, of course, & people do learn from experiences, but we underestimate how often people learn the wrong lessons. Suffering often warps & damages victims, I find.

My thoughts are w the victims of the ongoing horrors in the Middle East. They didnt choose this fight. They are treated like pawns in a war marked by atrocities, hate, & a disregard for our common humanity.

It’s by caring for each other -for all & not just some - that we can forge a better future.

That's interesting. I wonder if he ever really reflects on his life?

His doesn't read so much as a Canadian success story as it does a cautionary tale about ambition.

Because this whole populist provincial speed camera strategy balances on manufactured tension between Ford & mayors 'stealing from the little guy', Ford just doubled-down on his messaging.

It's much harder for him to directly engage with school boards, police chiefs or SickKids on this issue.
