Booksellers do occasionally make offers like that for e-pubs to drum up interest.

Co-signing this.

I co-founded the Radical Handmaids in 2012 to defeat an anti-choice bill* and a huge reason we were effective is that anti-choicers couldn't make fun of us because at least we *knew* we looked silly. They looked stupid as hell but took themselves seriously.

*we succeeded 💅

This is why we need more costumed protesters

"You are a transformative president" -- I regret to inform you that Mark Carney is kissing Trump's ass

Totally.

I think suffering *shows* your character, it does not necessarily build it.

Covid-19 pandemic is the best example of that. If suffering inherently creates empathy and builds your moral character, then we should all be thriving now after so much suffering and isolation AND YET...
shuilian.bsky.social
In connection w/your point, do you not find it a pernicious myth that suffering is ennobling & 'makes you a better person'? That can happen, of course, & people do learn from experiences, but we underestimate how often people learn the wrong lessons. Suffering often warps & damages victims, I find.

We can, and should, honour and acknowledge people's journeys to survival without glamourizing the struggle.

"Resilience is Futile" is available worldwide as a paperback, e-book and audiobook (narrated by me) and "Toute résilience serait futile" is available now in paperback form!
julieslalonde.bsky.social
I wrote my grad thesis on elderly women living in poverty & my goal was to show the gaps between policy & lived experience but I ended up writing a whole ass dissertation on the way their resilience minimized or downright hid the struggles they were experiencing. "Nana seems happy. Must be fine!"
julieslalonde.bsky.social
Finally, "resilience is futile" is also a challenge to the ways people glamourize suffering.

"Yes, horrible things happened to you but look at you now! Thriving!"

1- don't give *him* credit for the life I built.

2- I'm not a better person because of what happened. I'm a *different* person.

I survived 2 years of DV & 10 years of stalking because I got lucky & outlived my abuser.

The police left me to die. My employer abandoned me, as did my campus & most of the people in my life.

Telling me none of that matters because I should just be grateful to be alive is insulting.
julieslalonde.bsky.social
My memoir dropped the day the pandemic was declared & initially, the title got major blowback. "Julie's telling people to give up!"

But as the pandemic dragged on, people saw how they were abandoned by systems of power who told them to just "Be resilient" as though that's separate from privilege
julieslalonde.bsky.social
I liken resilience to a rodeo clown or a magician's assistant - a shiny way of focusing attention away from the main act.

We don't have to fix systems, provide support or build community care if we individualize every problem as "You're either resilient or you're a weak victim."
julieslalonde.bsky.social
Instead of praising people for their ability to withstand hardship, why not make life softer for them? More than that, my resilience and ability to get up in the morning despite the violence I was experiencing, were used to minimize the violence. "It can't be that bad! You seem fine!"
julieslalonde.bsky.social
Since the French edition of my memoir comes out today, seems an ideal time to explain why "resilience is futile" is not just the snappy title of my book but the conclusion of my academic research and the overall theme of my life and those of other survivors :

See the term “national divorce” a lot and that means something different when one partner is abusive
nbedera.bsky.social
One of the fundamental truths we need to acknowledge in this moment is that domestic violence is where fascists learned how to get away with their violence.

“What did you do to provoke him?” is exactly what victims hear when they try to seek help in an abusive relationship.
mskellymhayes.bsky.social
Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

Thanks! The OG English version is available as a paperback, e-book or audiobook (narrated by me) if that helps!

Writers often refer to their books as their babies but unlike parents, there's no tradition of newborn photo shoots.

Anyway, as a femme, I say match your book to your heels because both are worth celebrating 🥂

"Toute résilience serait futile" is now available!
