Well-written piece, important and horrifying
So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here
With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society. And the experts agree: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

What I never understood, is what Tegnell hoped to achieve with the inadequacy of the pandemic response? Now we’re seeing his brownstone maffia buddies populate high ranking positions in the Trump/RFKjr health department, continuing to set the stage for even more death and suffering, but why??

More absurdities from the NYT headline writer. No, Tina Peter was charged, tried and convicted for election fraud—not for being a "denier." And there is no "legal controversy," the Constitution is clear. There is a president seeking to exercise totalitarian powers.

“How did American democracy backslide?”

“Two ways: gradually, then suddenly”

Trump is the culmination of GOP trends that have been accelerating since at least Ford’s pardon, then Reagan’s rogue pre-presidency foreign policy & Iran-Contra, through everything in the GWB admin. All of it unpunished.
Trump and Co. haven’t been dismantling US institutions just this year, they’ve been doing it since 2017.

America has been democratic backsliding into authoritarianism for nearly a decade. Much of what we see now builds on what they did in term 1 and advanced in the interim.

But too many denied it.
One theme here is the speed of American institutional collapse.
“It took Erdoğan 15 years to do what Trump did in 100 days. If [Americans] do not accept the fact that this is a long game, and it will be brutal, I think you won’t have the patience and stamina to bear it.”

The Great Barrington Declaration was a bloody disaster. One of the greatest human follies of the modern age.

Sheer arrogance and cynicism.

Calling them the “Seditious Six” & branding their statements “despicable” before review is textbook definition of prejudgment. No panel, judge, or reviewing authority can claim neutrality once the SECDEF declares the accused guilty. This looks like the procedures used in dictatorships, not the US.

Really looks like the United States is about to launch a regime change war against Venezuela with:

-No casus belli
-No authorization from Congress
-No allies or international support
-No plan for a post-Maduro Venezuela
-No preparation for any sort of stabilization or containment of the fallout
