How is knowledge transmitted across generations in a foraging society?

With @danielredhead.bsky.social

Why do societies reliably develop strikingly similar traditions like dance songs, hero stories, shamanism & justice institutions?

In a new BBS target article, I propose a theory for such "super-attractors" + cultural evolution more broadly. Now open for commentary: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

💡 Across countries, we found that knowledge of negative externalities (compared with ignorance) robustly increased prosociality.

Guilt-prone individuals were more responsive to information about the negative consequences of their actions.

Observability by strangers only had negligible effects.

🔎 We asked how different mechanisms that activate guilt or shame influence prosociality across culturally diverse societies.

In a cross-national behavioral experiment, we examined how providing information about negative externalities and making decisions observable influence prosocial behavior.

Here, weird guy from X, I fixed it for you:

"If a scientific society wants to be welcoming to [...] students & researchers [from the Global South], does it make sense to hold its next annual conference in a country that's notorious for [being located in the Global South]?"

The answer is Yes.
