also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude

Don’t believe anyone who tells you that intelligence shows anything “without a doubt,” but even if the intelligence was water-tight, this strike was still murder. No law permits the deliberate, premeditated killing of civilians.

Most people who write about politics, right or left, have internalized the concept of the Trump supporter as the authentic american Volk and so many of their conclusions proceed from that

I'm so furious at the Democrats who voted to tell lies about Charlie Kirk, including many I have long supported.

No, he was not a “courageous American patriot" and "a model for young Americans across the political spectrum” who was known for “engaging in respectful, civil discourse." 1/3

Gov Greg Abbott vowing to suspend the teacher certifications of educators who posted things about Charlie Kirk that conservatives don't like Governor Greg Abbott today signed House Bill 20 into law, which protects Texans from wrongful censorship on social media platforms. The Governor was joined for the bill signing by Senators Bryan Hughes and Representative Briscoe Cain, the bill's authors, as well as Senators Charles Perry, Dawn Buckingham, and Angela Paxton. The Governor named social media censorship legislation as an agenda item for the second special legislative session in August.

"We will always defend the freedom of speech in Texas, which is why I am proud to sign House Bill 20 into law to protect first amendment rights in the Lone Star State," said Governor Abbott. "Social media websites have become our modern-day public square. They are a place for healthy public debate where information should be able to flow freely - but there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas. That is wrong, and we will not allow it in Texas. I thank Senator Bryan Hughes, Representative Briscoe Cain, and the Texas Legislature for ensuring that House Bill 20 reached my desk during the second special session."

I don't know why I'm even going to bother, but no it wasn't. It was hardly even brought up in the Federalist papers. The people who created the United States were almost pathologically fixated on the Roman Republic and Enlightenment-era Liberalism.

White Christian Taliban shit right here.

Time to stop tiptoeing around it. These people are fanatics pursuing a Holy War. It’s a critical piece of the threat assessment that should inform our strategies. (Psst. They’re not just going to hand back power.)

This week, USTR held a hearing concerning the Special 301 Investigation being pursued against Brazil.

MSF is deeply concerned that the US is pressuring Brazil to adopt IP measures that will make medicines even more inaccessible.

Whether we aim to reduce atmospheric CO₂ by carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) or CO₂ removal (CDR), we must store the carbon somewhere durably. This new study, led by @gidden.bsky.social, showed that global geologic carbon storage capacity is 10 times less than previous estimates. Not good.
A prudent planetary limit for geologic carbon storage - Nature
A risk-based, spatially explicit analysis of carbon storage in sedimentary basins establishes a prudent planetary limit of around 1,460 Gt of geological carbon storage, which requires making explicit ...

The Founders assumed that loyalty to one's institution would trump loyalty to ideology or party or "faction," a monumentally stupid assumption that by itself rubbishes the notion that they were farseeing sages of democratic theory

unironically, I think the thing that would most mystify the founders is how Congress has so thoroughly ceded its status as a coequal branch such that checks and balances are only either dead or weaponized.

I guess the founders never imagined Congress would not greedily protect its own power?

Drug trafficking is not a capital crime; it doesn’t carry a death sentence. I genuinely cannot think of anything under U.S. law that would permit premeditated government assassination of people suspected of drug trafficking.

Here's the video Trump just posted to Truth Social, with the claim that 11 people aboard the boat were killed.

There is zero evidence of self-defense here. Looks like a massacre of civilians at sea.

Even if they had drugs aboard, that's not a capital offense.

New from @financialtimes.com: It's time for the state to aggressively decarbonize by building public renewables. New York has the tools—it's up to @governor.ny.gov to use them. archive.ph/W0rwo
Financial Times
Bidenomics wasn't ambitious enough
Rapid decarbonisation will require an overhaul of local energy authorities and better macroeconomic planning
MELANIE BRUSSELER Instead of reviving the IRA's clean energy tax credits, the US should redesign its power sector by building publicly owned energy infrastructure. As climate writer Robinson Meyer recently noted, it is already clear in the face of electricity inflation that states with publicly owned power authorities such as the New York Power Authority "are able to intervene more forcefully in their own power markets than states that lack such capability ... because the state itself can act to build its own large-scale power plants". Their dramatic expansion should be the centrepiece of future power sector policy.
