Breaking News: Germany said it would suspend any exports to Israel of military equipment that could be used in Gaza, a significant break with its postwar past.
Germany Says It Will Suspend Military Exports to Israel for Use in Gaza
The move followed weeks of debate over reports of hunger in Gaza, but it was precipitated by Israel’s decision to expand military operations there.

Not for the first time I am begging angry people to put the phone down, walk through actual streets, go to actual pubs, stand on the touch line at local sports clubs, browse Saturday markets, chat with ramblers on footpaths and rediscover beauty & contentedness.

What’s a worse lie:

The lie from the US that Iran is close to nuclear weapon, which US intel & the IAEA disagree with.

Or the lie from the EU that Iran could avoid all this by returning to the negotiating table when they were ALREADY at the negotiating able & heading to Oman when Israel attacked?

Last week, @rhodesben.bsky.social and I did a Munk Debates against Kevin Roberts and Kellyanne Conway on whether Trump is leading America into a new golden age.

We won. This is from my closing statement.

A question that I haven't heard a good answer to: if cutting migration by a third in a year hasn't changed the narrative on it at all - what would make you think cutting it by another third (or half] would?
Immigration fell by a third in the 9 months after General Election. (From 1.2m visas to 800k in year to March 2025). The new lower headline migration figure (the 12 months of 2024) will come out 10 days after the white paper. Saying net migration is 700k (last stat: year to June 2024) is out of date

I love these silicon valley bros that think ChatGPT has achieved some kind of sentience and therefore might have rights.

Like dudes, you don't even think poor people deserve rights, let's try to achieve that before giving person-hood to the autocomplete algorithm.

One of the most annoying things about the Rwanda policy was people saying "well what's your plan".

As if me not having some magical solution obliged us to do something that wouldn't work at enormous cost.
I think this - and Will's piece in his next tweet - are about right. Something I feel you often collide with when you write about politics is there are a lot of people who think that 'but that is unpopular' obliges the universe to produce a popular policy option for you.
It's the thing I grappled with on my substack; just because mass immigration is unpopular no more means it will actually work as a governing agenda than keeping taxes low in face of public services imploding or maintaining full employment in the face of high inflation. Policy impact actually matters
