Oligarchy (noun): A government of and by a few at the top, who exercise power for their own benefit. Their power and wealth increase as they make laws that favor themselves, manipulate financial markets, and create monopolies that put more wealth into their pockets.

Ok #booksky, let’s talk.

👎🏼Goodreads, owned by Amazon, fuels its monopoly on books.

👍🏼StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform, offers an ethical, ad-free alternative with mood-based recommendations, user control over data, and a focus on inclusivity. Support diversity over corporate power!

Let’s be clear: the whole thing is a con. TikTok could’ve kept the app rolling on Sunday but by shutting down & mentioning Trump, he gets to be the savior. One of many examples of companies & billionaires bowing down.

It’s BS. But it’s also the reality. Let’s not give Trump anymore opportunities 👍🏾

Two reminders:
1) Trump initiated this ban on August 7, 2020 with an Executive Order
2) Our leaders can’t get anything done to actually protect us, but they were able to ban TikTok

My introduction to #booksky I guess?

📚 Reading is political
🎧 Audiobooks count as reading
📖 Reading is not a competition
🤔 Reading critically & reading for fun are not mutually exclusive
👉 If you support problematic authors, you deserve to be called out on it

Friendly reminder that if you buy a book on Kindle, you're only paying for the rights to read, not own. If a book truly gets banned, it will be taken away from digital platforms like Kindle, nook, etc. Consider getting physical copies of banned (or other) books!

Nobody cares if you’re not affected by the TikTok ban.

A lot of people are affected. Let us grieve in peace.

TikTok provided us comfort and entertainment during some really dark days. The pandemic was rough and we are approaching even more dark times.

Just FYI, administrative warrants (like the ones used by ICE) are not judicial warrants (used by cops, signed by a judge).

You do NOT legally have to open the door for an ICE officer with an administrative warrant *no matter what the ICE officer says.*

I turn to literature in these times to steady myself with the words of writers who were scared. Or enraged with righteous indignation. Or saddened by our country’s inability to live up to its potential.

Words to help me resist. I hope they help you.

I don’t believe one person in his cabinet that says they will respect marriage equality as settled law and leave it alone. Three Supreme Court justices said the same thing about abortion and lied.

Missourians just overturned the abortion ban with a constitutional amendment. The amendment said that doctors would decide fetal viability.

But why work on funding schools or roads or hospitals or state workers or teachers when you can overturn the will of the people?

We now know UnitedHealth—under Brian Thompson—illegally overcharged cancer patients for meds by more than 1000%.

What we don't know is how many cancer patients died or were financially ruined as a result?

What we demand to know is why that act isn't deemed corporate murder & where are the arrests?

The Supreme Court ruled corporations were allowed to donate unlimited amounts to politicians in 2010.

It only took them 6 years to take complete control of the government and 15 years to mark sure their voices are the only ones the masses ever hear again.
