Hi! I'm a conservation biologists extending biophysical, organismal-based ecology to a population level using agent-based, spatially explicit, habitat models. I work for NOAA and UCSC and focus on endangered winter-run Chinook salmon and threatened green sturgeon.

Eighty-five percent participation in a voluntary program to slow down and thus reduce vessel noise is… actually pretty impressive? Probably much higher than the percentage of drivers who stick to the speed limit in, say, Yellowstone. #marineroadecology

Jane Goodall was my first childhood hero, as I loved animals as a kid and was inspired by her story. I still remember the National Geographic specials about her. RIP.

I know I wasn't the only little girl who wanted to BE Jane Goodall when I grew up. Thank you for your ground-breaking research and tireless advocacy for animals and nature. Rest easy, Dr. Goodall.

Cool poster and cool program! And 💯 totally agree that posters can be like a main event instead of the afterthought. Where else can you learn such a wide array of new research so fast with so much individual creativity?

Wright, a longtime fracking exec, probably did more to kill coal than any wine-sipping coastal lib in America. He should be proud — it’s his industry’s greatest accomplishment!

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

I'm old enough to remember (way back in 2016) when an armed militia actually occupied a federal government facility in the state of Oregon (for over a month!) and engaged in a shootout with the FBI. And, that wasn't deemed sufficient to justify deploying the military.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

I had an idea yesterday about making a word search that, when solved, would be a data visualization.

So, I coded it up... and it worked!

This shows abundance of three bird species in Brooklyn Bridge Park over a year.

It feels like there are some fun possibilities here.

On Saturday, 100+ lake sturgeon were released into the Flint River as part of a 25-year project to bring the Saginaw Bay Watershed sturgeon population back and sustain it. Mott is happy to support lake sturgeon reintroduction through a grant to @conservationfnd.bsky.social's Great Lakes Office.
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service employees transfer sturgeon into a bucket using a net. A hand holds a small sturgeon over a bucket of fish. A smiling young boy holds a small sturgeon to release into a river. A large group of people wait on a riverbank staircase for the opportunity to release sturgeon into a river.

Met a real life Hexxus today: the dredge miner that destroyed the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River. It's weird that it has been turned into a museum & that historical preservation wants to save the "pristine dredge tailings". You know what would be cooler than worshipping this relic? 10,000 salmon. 🐟
A five-story high enormous machine with conveyor belts and cranes sits in a swampy pit in the bottom of a mountainous valley. A stark sun shines in a clear blue sky overhead, and dredge tailings extend off into the distance as enormous mounds of disturbed cobble that are so sterile nothing will even grow on them.
