New paper from our lab: The use of #microplastics as case-building material by larval caddisflies facilitates the transfer of plastic (& potentially its associated contaminants) to predatory fish.
Larval caddisflies (Limnephilidae) that had been exposed to microplastics (PET) and natural materials will readily incorporate plastic into their cases. Plastic in gastrointestinal tract of a freshwater fish (brown bullhead) exposed to larval caddisflies whose cases incorporate plastic.

Nice article by @jimrobbins.bsky.social in @nytimes.com on one of my favorites - marbled murrelet - and its potential fate given changes to our forests, oceans and the US Endangered Species Act. @coforegonstate.bsky.social 🧪

Do heat waves happen in rivers? How do river heat waves (RHW) compare to air heat waves (AHW)?

www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Here we show: 1) RHWs occur less frequently & intensively but last twice as long as AHWs; 2) RHW have risen much faster than AHWs.

Congrats to Dr. Kayal Sadayappan!

How does trophic connectivity between different ecosystems work at a landscape scale? We applied a novel conceptual framework with functional traits and fatty acid biomarkers to assess direct and indirect effects of landscape drivers on cross-ecosystem connectivity in stream-riparian #foodwebs
Fatty acid biomarkers reveal landscape influences on linkages between aquatic and terrestrial food webs
Stream and riparian habitats are meta-ecosystems that can be strongly connected via the emergence of aquatic insects, which form an important prey subsidy for terrestrial consumers. Anthropogenic per...

Rapid evolution occurs, but speciation rates are nowhere near fast enough to replace the loss of entire endemic lineages.

Bioinvasions & other stressors are causing global biodiversity losses that could take millions of years to fill - or are irreversible. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Such an inspiring story, and so symbolic - teens, all descendants of the region’s Indigenous tribes, paddling along a river that has been recently freed by the largest dam removal project in American history!
15 teens. 300 miles. One mighty ancestral river, running free.
The removal of four dams finally made a descent of the Klamath possible. These Indigenous kayakers became the first to attempt it.
