When we look at a river, what are we really seeing?

In Following the Bend, Ellen Wohl takes readers on a majestic journey by water to find answers, along the way shedding light on the key concepts of modern river science.

NSF today released instructions for the next round of applicants to its Graduate Research Fellowship Program. A key group—second-year Ph.D. students—is no longer eligible, and students who are still able to apply will face an unusually narrow timeframe. https://scim.ag/3KlQkQk
‘Completely shattered.’ Changes to NSF’s graduate student fellowship spur outcry
The announcement comes months later than usual, leaving many would-be applicants stranded

Do heat waves happen in rivers? How do river heat waves (RHW) compare to air heat waves (AHW)?

www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Here we show: 1) RHWs occur less frequently & intensively but last twice as long as AHWs; 2) RHW have risen much faster than AHWs.

Congrats to Dr. Kayal Sadayappan!

Do forest recovery + higher soil organic C elevate production of dissolved inorganic C? No, because cooling soils + lower moisture reduce soil respiration.

On the other hand, drier climate does diminish carbonate weathering + reduce DIC export

With emissions still rising 📈 and the catastrophic consequences 🔥 becoming ever clearer, geoengineering is getting ever more tempting 🧪

Geoengineering is not going to save the poles from climate change
A review of the five main methods proposed for cooling down the poles or slowing the loss of ice concludes they are all wildly impractical, wouldn't work, or both
