Don't overthink the "plot" of the game. Focus entirely on the characters and what players WANT to do. They'll never "derail" your plans... be hungry to see how your PCs win.
Be a fan of players/PCs; let them be special in a world that is fair but uncaring.

Combat takes long sometimes, and waiting for your turn can sometimes take a while.... okay yeah sure you can have reactions to player or enemy actions/movement .... but man does combat drag sometimes in D&D.
