Falmouth!* Come see me and Jonn talk about all the things at Falmouth Book Festival! It will be a very fun evening as he shouts about borders and I shout about the apocalypse and we both shout about conspiracy theories probably.

*and surrounding areas such as Penryn

Two weeks' today, @tom-phillips.com and I are having a lovely chat at the Falmouth Book Festival. Come along, and watch me torn limb from limb by a rampaging mob of Mebyon Kernow activists, while Tom laughs that I got what I asked for!

Alack, I forgot to buy parsley for the Nigel Slater recipe and it is nearly 7pm on a Sunday in rural Devon, so we will have to to without 😢

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

I was this years old when I realised Crediton actually has a bishop. (For those not from this part of Devon, it’s a tiny town).
Bearing in mind the entirety of Plymouth (RC) Diocese (which covers this 👇 geography) currently has zero bishop.
Part of a map showing Catholic diocese in England. Plymouth Diocese stretches from Penzance to Dorset.

Social media, meaning the spaces for people to meet and socialize globally, has been dead for possibly 10 years already.

What we have now is parasocial media: a form of mass media where there’s illusion of relationships covering a high virality broadcast tool controlled by algorithms.

As someone with a very loud brain that I like to try and silence with lots of loud things (video, radio, music, etc)... I am so mad that the best thing to do is to actually just sit in silence without moving for a full half an hour. Game changing. Silences the brain completely for hours.

I have cut down my caffeine consumption quite a lot and have done this partly by drinking decaffeinated tea and coffee. Somehow I’ve developed a mild addiction to these too, as I discovered when it turned out this morning that we had run out of decaf coffee 🤔

I went a bit mad in the Vilnius souvenir shops, but you don’t know you need a chocolate map of the ethnographic regions of Lithuania until you see a chocolate map of the ethnographic regions of Lithuania

Look, I just think that one of the St Teresas could have chosen a feast day which wasn’t in October, to make things less confusing

Mostly, hell is on fire (checks out) but sometimes hell is also an empty place (hell designed by an extrovert) and sometimes there’s a helpful signpost telling you how to get there 😅

The gospel this week is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, which has what led me to search for the word “Hell” in a stock photo library and be somewhat intrigued by the results.

Over on 'All Old Strange Things' I've written a new free-to-read post reflecting on @peteralanross.bsky.social's thought-provoking book 'Upon A White Horse': substack.com/home/post/p-...

'I was glad it was a very hot, sunny day with bright blue skies, because otherwise the deserted, ruined church with legends connected to it of fiends and black dogs breathing fire might have spooked me a little.'

My current thing is to just keep writing as often as I can, and hopefully at some point I’ll become better at it and maybe decide what to write about.

There are a lot of Larkin references in my Substack posts - I'm not sure what it says about me that the only English-language poets I can reliably quote are Philip Larkin, Gerard Manley Hopkins and AA Milne.
