Hello, the paperback of my latest book is in stores TODAY, which is very exciting.

It's had some wonderful reviews and I'm very proud of it, please buy it and also tell everybody you know to buy it too.

Bookshop link here (other retailers are available): bit.ly/4ocy630
The paperback cover of Tom Phillips's A Brief History of The End of the F*cking World – subtitle: 3,000 Years of Getting It Wrong (So Far...) – which shows an exploding planet Earth on a white background, the mushroom cloud obscuring the "u" in "Fucking".

The image is captioned "OUT NOW IN PAPERBACK", because it is now out in paperback. A quote from the Irish Independent, reading: "'Exceptionally funny from cover to cover, it is not only an entertaining read but also deeply researched and thoughtful".

Banged newsletter out a couple of hours early because I'm busy all afternoon and don't want to be overtaken by Events.

This week: the Tories are dying, and it’s less fun than I’d imagined? Also: a new way of mapping urban UK; and some anti-car propaganda from the Walt Disney Corporation.
…but with a whimper

From memory they don't try to justify it at all. (I *assume* there was once a justification - old planes without digital components that the AI couldn't take over - but it got lost in drafts, reshoots or the edit as the plot changed around it.)

I would like to know more about the Kevin Costner racecar dog reincarnation film. Obviously I could just Google it, but I'm enjoying living with the uncertainty over whether I imagined that bit.

Falmouth!* Come see me and Jonn talk about all the things at Falmouth Book Festival! It will be a very fun evening as he shouts about borders and I shout about the apocalypse and we both shout about conspiracy theories probably.

Two weeks' today, @tom-phillips.com and I are having a lovely chat at the Falmouth Book Festival. Come along, and watch me torn limb from limb by a rampaging mob of Mebyon Kernow activists, while Tom laughs that I got what I asked for!

We need to hear out the legitimate concerns of people who think generals are conspiring with civil servants to do race communism in Britain.

what the fuck is going on
tom-phillips.com
It is widespread, but in the UK context I think it's worth being very clear that the radicalisation of our political and media spheres is running way ahead of broader public opinion.
tom-phillips.com
Suspect part of our elite radicalisation problem is that the mechanisms mean they don't realise it's happening to them. It's not a conscious rejection of previous beliefs, it's all ambient radicalisation that lets them believe *they* haven't changed - so they end up saying mad shit about reality.

The UK is “madly left, madly liberal, hyper-progressive”, Syed says. This is a deeply odd speech, seemingly from yet another person who spends a lot of time on X.

[I deleted earlier post which had the typo of saying, 'US' rather than 'UK'.]

On the one hand, these attempts to import an extremist Christian nationalism from the US are deeply alarming; on the other, Soho should be pedestrianised, so

CHOTINER: So not actually all night long.
RICHIE: Look, uh, artists take liberties. This is — can we stop for a sec

In a new interview, Lionel Richie discusses the lessons he learned from talking to artists like Tina Turner and Marvin Gaye. “Don’t say much. Just listen. And they’ll teach you the whole navigation of this crazy world we’re living in,” he said.
How Lionel Richie Mastered the Love Song
The artist discusses touring with Tina Turner, what he learned from Marvin Gaye, and the “most important note” to hit—in music and in life.

I mean as Zoe noted in her original post, Full Fact had debunked this several days before this show was even recorded, there's absolutely no excuse. The number of people who had to just not even slightly do their job for this to happen is amazing

I mean they're surely getting extremely sued and it feels like only the most grovelling, extremely widely broadcast apology is going to maybe save them a bit

The number of things that need to have gone staggeringly wrong at the BBC for this to make it to air is honestly kind of remarkable
