74 students and 48 mentors have signed up so far! We can accommodate more of both groups.

Student sign-up link is in the first comment.

Being a podcaster costs $40 for a decent mic and $18 per month for hosting. The hard part is having something interesting to say. Get a degree in that!

Rest in power. Nice guy in my admittedly limited conversations. Thoughtful and interesting both times.

How could a man who never set foot in a library until he was in college create what is considered the most extensive online collection of global Black history?

Maybe it had something to do with the story Dr. Quintard Taylor's father told him when he was a young boy.

Remembering Quintard Taylor: Historian of the Black West and beyond
Dr. Quintard Taylor taught history at the University of Washington and created BlackPast.org, an online collection of global Black history. He died Sept. 21, 2025, at the age of 76.

Got 40 mentors & 47 students signed up so far.
Need more of both, but particularly students.

Typical year, we get ~125 mentors & 250+ students. I know this year will not be typical.

I can understand why NSF is limiting GRFP apps to undergrads and 1st year grad students .

What I can't why they didn't wait one cycle to implement after making the announcement.

But I do trust that the program officers are doing their best to keep science afloat under extraordinary conditions.

The GRFP announcement from NSF cuts out an entire cohort of 2nd year students from consideration, without warning. This is so deeply unfair that it warrants a formal protest from the scientific community. If someone wants to work with me to craft an open letter and solicit signatures, LMK.

New: After a long wait, the GRFP solicitation is live! Deadlines have been extended to early November, so applicants have a bit over a month to submit. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Heads up that the NSF #GRFP guidelines suddenly changed and now only current first-year grad students are eligible...my second-year student who intentionally waited to maximize her chances is devastated, as countless others will be. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

We typically have ~125-150 mentors meeting with 250-300 students during the workshop.

We also accommodate on-site drop-ins through an ad hoc speed matching of mentors and mentees.

Here is a video from 2024 that was toward the end of the workshop. We had over 400 mentors+mentees last year.

I'm open & frank about the loss of many career pathways & the uncertainty. I share changes as they happen. I remind them that the problems needing science-trained people will not go away because leaders are ignoring them.

I don't share: this reality has sucked a chunk of the joy from my work.

Trump again just implied that the MMR vaccine causes autism.

Many studies have shown that there is no relationship between MMR vaccine and the development of autism.

This one followed every single child born in Denmark from 1991 through 1998 (n=537,303). There was no association.
A Population-Based Study of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccination and Autism | NEJM
It has been suggested that vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) is a cause of autism. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all children born in Denmark from January 1991 th...
