Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

Big investigation by Peter and @lighthousereports.com out in the New Statesman today. (We spoke re NHS data.)

There's lots beyond the NHS here. I thought I 'knew' TBI; even I was struck by the scale of what Ellison made - it dwarfs major think tanks like IPPR.

Stop what’s you’re doing and read this from FoTI fellow and favourite web heretic @robin.berjon.com. And by all means disagree with it, but it is asking the right questions about money, power, and our future.

"Wikipedia can save the internet with advertising." In Tech Policy Press today, Robin Berjon (@robin.berjon.com) shares what some will consider a heretical idea—Wikipedia should launch an ad platform for the commons, built to safeguard democracy rather than sabotage it.

The internet's in a bad place. We're not winning. How can we turn things around? We need money.

What parts of the internet 1) are still under democratic control and 2) are in a position to produce significant revenue? It's mostly down to Wikipedia.

But there's more… 🧵

I know Christopher Hitchens is not everybody’s cup of tea these days, and he went from hero of mine to bitter disappointment in my adolescence, but it has to be admitted that he was an absolute master of public debate when he was good. He was not intimidated and was eloquent under pressure. I think the capacity of liberals and left-wingers to be spontaneous and effective public speakers and debaters has atrophied terribly, and they need to relearn this art—fast. I say “speakers” specifically, because there are still fine writers, but we live in a situation where the spoken rather than the written word is becoming more important. Of some contemporary relevance, his total unwillingness to be browbeaten about the death of Jerry Falwell:

Story below showing how a town got suckered into another data centre thinking it would boost growth. Emily here makes THE key point - so obvious to AI people I talk to that they are confused it needs explaining to ministers - data centres do not magic you up a tech sector.

Microsoft CEO claimed "investing in data centres was 'effectively' also investing in modernising the power grid but did not say that money would be shared directly with the UK's power supplier"

In short: he will pile more demand onto the grid but won't pay for it.

Extraordinary report by Leo Lewis @urbandirt.bsky.social in FT, who has seen the Japan-US MOU on investment. It’s extortion basically. Japan commits to invest hundreds of billions in the US. Trump decides the investments. US keeps 90% of the profits.
