Grateful for the cross-party support at today's launch of World Vacant Homes Day outside Leinster House in Dublin.

The greenest home is the one that's already built. Vacancy and dereliction blight communities across our cities, towns and rural areas.

🏡 On this first ever #WorldVacantHomesDay, we highlight one of the biggest contradictions of our time: too many homes without people, too many people without homes.

🇪🇺 EU countries must prioritise renovating & reallocating vacant houses for social housing.
There is no place like home.
Yet too many of them are vacant. It’s not only a housing crisis, it’s also a vacant homes crisis.” The graphic shows bar charts comparing the national percentage of vacant homes (yellow bars) and the percentage of vacant homes in capital cities (dark green bars) across several European countries. The countries shown are the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain. A line marks 50% on the y-axis. An early start this morning — taking the train to Dublin with special cargo for the launch of World Vacant Homes Day.

I'll be joined on the other end by Frank O'Connor and Jude Sherry, who will be special guests at the launch outside Leinster House.

Here's background to that local budget "spoof" last year — that ended up costing small businesses.

TLDR; FF/FG promised not to raise rates in an election year. So in order to balance the budget, they cut rebates to smaller businesses, who ended up paying more than if rates had been increased. 🤬

The entire budget for BusConnects in Cork (plus a little more). 🤦‍♂️

In Cork City Council, we will be bringing in targeted rates rebates for smaller businesses — after FF/FG removed them last year, after tying themselves in knots in pre-election promises.

Lessons not learned by their higher-ups.

It's official. They're giving big restaurant chains a massive tax cut, costing nearly €700m in the #VAT cut to hospitality.

For that kind of money you could:

Delighted to attend the Ballinlough Garda Safety Forum! With Christmas coming, let’s stay vigilant & look out for each other. Only 1 burglary, 1 assault & 1 car theft (recovered) this year. Huge credit and thanks to our Gardaí & community. Let’s keep Ballinlough safe & strong!

€2.377bn for public transport vs €1.724bn for roads in #budget26 is NOT a 2:1 investment ratio for public transport infrastructure over roads as previously committed.

The Government can claim the €2bn for MetroLink more than balance that equation BUT the €2 billion was taken from the 1/2

Despite ambitious promises in their manifestos and Programme for Government, the Government parties have failed to invest adequately in childcare in this Budget cycle.

The truth is today's #budget2026 VAT cut at a cost of €700m to the taxpayer would have helped my mum's now closed restaurant only a little.

What would have helped her & so many small restaurants a lot more was a sliding VAT rate. Where the likes of McDonald's get a lot less reduction & smaller 1/2

We fought tooth and nail for the the Residential Land Tax for a reason. We knew that it was a game-changer for delivery of new land for much needed housing.

But this #budget2026 undercuts the RZLT by bringing in loopholes to allow more and more landowners to postpone payment. 1/2

The Residential Zoned Land Tax #RZLT is essential to take land hoarders to task and ensure that our many empty sites lying idle in the country are put to use.

Government loopholes are gutting the Land Hoarding Tax. Empty sites stay empty. Hoarders keep winning.

This is an eye-watering tax cut that will go directly into the pockets of big chain restaurants. This tax cut would fund the equivalent of building Luas Finglas every year.

Over the summer, the Government raided the Climate & Nature fund to pay for gaps in their infrastructure bill. Today's Budget could have fixed that and committed new investment for nature and the environment.
Unfortunately, there has been no change in their approach. A wasted opportunity.

Government using a sledgehammer to crack a nut here 🥜

A more targeted scheme would have delivered better value to taxpayers while supporting the businesses who need it most.

Nothing in the Budget to advance a Public Model of Childcare.
Big reforms like this take time, need to be supported through each budget. The Government is failing to progress this vital reform that will address affordability and capacity.

The Land-hoarding Tax (RZLT) was introduced last year. It's been a success. 2,000 returns filed. Over €40 million eared to the State.
Why is the Government allowing another year for landowners to seek an exemption? Land zone for housing needs to be brought into use now.

👶🏻 Provide public childcare for 60,000

Before the budget, the Greens set out how you could do more to support smaller restaurants and cafes - at a third of the cost. The Government ignored it, deciding to hand out millions for Big Macs.

I still can't believe that they're doing this. Giving a massive VAT tax break that'll do very little for small cafés and restaurants, while giving millions to big chains.

Weak, unfocused governance. They're too comfortable chucking out our tax money.

Another year of destruction and devastation.
We mourn all of the victims of, and since, October 7.
