Watching the Mariners Tigers series go to five games:
A cartoon man wearing a shirt that says sickos and a Toronto Blue Jays hat looks through a window and says “YES… HA HA HA… YES!”

(Don’t mind me, just catching up on Adonis pics I haven’t seen yet. I love this cat and I won’t stop reposting him so you’d better learn to love him too)

"Reproductive freedom should be sacrosanct" and "we should tax women who refuse to breed" are not in fact mutually compatible statements.
opinionhaver.bsky.social
My most controversial take on this is probably that while I think reproductive freedom should be sacrosanct, I don’t really have any problem with additional taxes on (high income) childless people. Someone gotta pay into the pensions!

I’m trying not to feel so doomy and gloomy but, you know *gestures vaguely toward the outside.* But yarn craft, books, the online catalog of my local library, fancy little snacks from my first visit to a Daiso store (which also got me out of the house!), these are little things I can celebrate 💛

A good thing: I crocheted three shawls last month and have several in progress right now (waiting on more yarn for some), plus a shawl design I’m working on seems to actually be working out mathematically! And crocheting gives me time to listen to audiobooks. More stitches, more stories: a win! 🧶

glad to be born at a time when i got to see what life was like before the internet and will be dead before AI completely destroys humanity

Anyway I’m going back to my crochet and audiobooks, just had to pop on to shake my fist at a bunch of clouds and wonder about what could have been if greedy, downward-punching conmen—and the capitalist ideals they rode in on—didn’t destroy every new online space they slither into.

This is not to say that early homepages/weblogs/journals/etc., etc. weren’t without their drama. Where two or more are gathered there will be dirt/tea/popcorn. But at least it wasn’t like *this*

Now we’ve just got a sea of ready-made platforms and apps that are mostly there to scrape your data and steal your art and words, should you choose meaningful contribution over comment section jeering, and a whole host of grifting trolls spreading their unpleasantness throughout.

I miss mid-to-late ‘90s internet where most people (or at least the ones I found) were more concerned with learning how to write the back end html while designing the front facing aesthetic of their own homepages to post hateful garbage and antagonize vulnerable demographics.

(Also I couldn’t remember who I follow who recommended this, so I had to search until I found the post I hearted! I also recommend Meg Elison’s writing, I recently reread the PM Press collection of her short stories that includes The Pill (outstanding), but they are all SO GOOD)

A recommendation that stuck with me, and I could barely put it down (read as a hybrid of text and audio, so also “didn’t want to stop listening,” haha). The format is inventive and all of the threads weave together beautifully to tell the story. I don’t recommend much myself, but I loved this one.

I found out about it AFTER it got nominated for the LeGuin, but this is a quietly incredible book. Non-linear narrative with bold formal choices. Alternate histories, fascinating futures including the relationships people form with AI. Gorgeous style and a really different approach to sci-fi.

Mine would say something like THE CARAMEL APPLE EMPANADA, WHILE INAUTHENTIC, IS THE CLOSEST THING WE HAVE TO 1980s ERA McDONALD’S APPLE PIES AND I WILL CAMPAIGN CEASELESSLY FOR ITS RETURN UNTIL THE TACO BELL COWARDS RETURN IT PERMANENTLY AND NOT AS PART OF A GIMMICK MENU

In a recent piece, Kelsey Dodson shares what it's like to menstruate in prison. One woman says she was forced to bleed through her underwear, her pants, and finally her white blanket during an hour-long count. This piece was co-published with @theguardian.com. Please give it a read.
What It's Like to Have Your Period in Prison
Even at a women’s prison, your menstruation care needs may not be met.
