"There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." Writer. Editor and journalist. Opinions are my own. she/her
You know what I miss about video rental stores besides everything? When you picked up a VHS box cover from a shelf, it didn’t start blaring a random part of the movie at you as you tried to think about if you wanted to watch it.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I was watching Criminal Minds tonight, like I do, and the quote at the end of the episode was Tom Stoppard. *X-Files theme music plays*

Listening to a new Louis CK comedy special? No thanks. Frankly, I’d rather watch him masturbate. Perhaps that should have been his punishment. Just put him on a stage and be like “heard you like doing this in front of people. have at it.”

Whenever somebody who works on my shift calls out sick before I can call out sick, I’m like Ben Affleck at the end of Good Will Hunting. Like, just happy for you, bro. You got out of here. Not me tho.

The first rule of Fight Club is release a statement about Fight Club to the press.
Wow — Senators Van Hollen, Smith, Murphy, Sanders, Warren, Markey, Merkley, Heinrich have created an official internal "Fight Club."

They're challenging Schumer & Gillibrand's leadership, arguing the party is using an old, corporate-friendly playbook insufficient to take on Trump or win elections.

If you’re a person who’s done something to attract the attention of Isaac Chotiner, I might suggest shutting the hell up. This is the equivalent of people in the aughts agreeing to do on-camera interviews on The Daily Show in which they were then summarily destroyed.

This is rage bait, but at least nobody will accuse it of recency bias. Also, I do love Princess Bride, and placing it on the list is only right, and if you think it deserves where it landed (37) then fine, but to place Superbad at 20 (or anywhere on this list, really!) is egregiously wrong.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

You know what I miss about ye olde internet? That I used to visit sites. I cannot tell you the amount of hours I whiled away on forums and blogs over the years. Now, sites want me to invite them into my inbox, and then they never leave and they become intrusive in a way that I hate.

Thanks to Facebook birthday notifications, I’ve just now realized that my dad and every single one of his four sisters were born in the same month a few days apart and grandma and grandpa must have had a standing Valentine’s Day appointment.

Been pondering the "write for yourself / no, write for an audience" convos I've seen going around. This obviously varies for everyone, but for me it's "write for myself, edit for an audience." I can't finish a project unless I retreat into a bubble and pretend nobody will ever read it--

There's a raccoon who keeps getting into our neighbour's trash and making a huge mess and we started calling him Monsieur Poubelle. It's good to know Mr Poubelle has a short snout
A shorter snout is one of several physical traits linked to domestication. Using almost 20,000 raccoon photos from iNaturalist, researchers found that urban raccoons' snouts were 3.5% shorter than rural ones.
