Every court has agreed that the Feds have no justification to send the military or the Guard in. The Trump admin has unsuccessfully tried to find creative ways around these rulings which shows they’re still working (somewhat) within the bounds of the law.

Don’t cede legal ground until we have to.

Kristi Noem & a right wing influencer that peaked in high school r visiting PDX today

My spooky season advice is that u treat these ppl like demons trying to goad u into stepping out of ur protective salt circle so they can enact violence

They need flashy footage to make $$$ on their livestreams!

Noem’s agenda for the trip has not been announced.

Sen. Wyden had a blunt response: “Kristi Noem is cosplaying as a public official. In reality, she’s been sent by Trump to incite violence."

Two things felt different to the ppl I spoke with who’d been protesting at the ICE building for months.

1st was the sheer volume of tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bangs used, seemingly unprovoked.

2nd was seeing so many videographers/live-streamers embedded with the feds as they marched out.

Hours after a federal judge paused the Trump administration’s plans to deploy 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland, federal law enforcement officers escalated the tactics used on protesters in the city.

Troy and I were on the ground:

This is a win. We should celebrate that the courts are still working, and even Trump appointed judges can see the evidence before them.

Let’s protect our neighbors and remain disciplined and strategic. We are in the fight against fascism for the long haul, and we will win.

A preliminary injunction hearing may follow later this month and the facts on the ground matter.

If a right wing influencer with a camera is trying to goad you into a fight, there is a reason for that, and the reason is we could lose our legal standing to stop the feds from coming in.

Update as of 4:30pm

Temporary Restraining Order against the feds has been granted. The judge did not find evidence that the military or the guard need to be brought in because the protests in Portland have been relatively calm.

Aggression is coming from federal agents and right wing provocateurs

Still no decision from a federal judge on deploying troops to Portland. Meanwhile, protesters at the ICE facility are getting tear gassed by federal agents in broad daylight.
taylorgriggs.bsky.social
Court is adjourned but no decision was immediately made. Judge says she hopes to issue a decision later today or tomorrow. More soon.

Massive escalation at the ICE facility. Federal agents made multiple arrests (at least 4), threw out gas, and shot tons of pepper balls.

Heard one of the people arrested screaming minutes later. Not possible to get a visual.

I am monitoring how federal agents and even how our own police are acting towards people exercising their rights, as is the rest of Council. Right wing agitators have been sent to Portland to pick fights, and national outlets are exacerbating false narratives.

This will not be the new normal.
councilormorillo.bsky.social
This is a blatant violation of 1st Amendment rights.

Gooding v. Wilson 1972 and Lewis v. City of New Orleans 1974 established that criticizing law enforcement is protected free speech. This woman posed no threat to the agent, aside from a bruised ego.

If he can’t handle that he can’t do the job.

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

They were delicious, very refreshing lol

In a lot of meetings today given Trump’s attempt to send federal troops in so I don’t have time to put out threads but I made a video this morning, and will update as it’s safe to do so

Trump announced that he’s directing federal troops to Portland. Portlanders look after each other, and that’s how we’re going to overcome these threats.🧵

✅Report suspected federal agent sightings to PIRC’s hotline (1-888-622-1510) instead of spreading rumors on social media.

We can expand traffic cameras for safety while also having guardrails for data storage/sharing/surveillance. These are not mutually exclusive.

What would it look like if our shelter beds opened up because we focused on getting unhoused folks who are currently using them into long term housing?

In a dire budget that's only being worsened by Federal cuts, we have to be judicious. These rushed shelter expansions do not address root causes.
councilormorillo.bsky.social
What's outlined in this article is also what I've been hearing directly from unhoused people in my district when I stop to talk to them on my walks, or when we've had lunch together.

None of this comes as a surprise.
councilormorillo.bsky.social
This is what happens when you rush to expand shelters with limited services rather than connect people to housing, connect people to job trainings, or expand mental health and drug treatment services.

The Mayor's shelter plan uses one time funding that will completely evaporate in June 2026.
councilormorillo.bsky.social
It's disturbing that I got more training on cleanliness as a food service worker than these people are getting through the rushed expansion of shelter beds. This is dangerous for employees, unhoused people, and for Portland residents.

Houseless advocates have sounded the alarm for months.
councilormorillo.bsky.social
I didn’t go on this trip. The chairs of the Housing Committee went, and the main author of the Social Housing Resolution. The information they brought back is vital.

Did you express the same concern when the head of the police union went to Portugal, or Mayor Wheeler traveled abroad?

Any time they tell you it can't be done in Portland, remember that California already did it.

A preview of our draft of an ordinance to do this exact thing is coming to the Community and Public Safety Committee this Tuesday, 9/23 at 2:30 pm.
