Starting my "State of the Position" series this week with catcher, of course, and in the past it was usually because we wanted to get the worst out of the way first.

But catcher was kind of awesome in 2025 and looks great for 2026: www.cbssports.com/fantasy/base...
State of the catcher position for 2026: Fresh talent adds long-awaited Fantasy depth behind the plate
From Hunter Goodman to Shea Langeliers, help is on the way at the catcher position

Serious answer that I could actually see: Jelly Roll?

Honest answer: Nobody because there's zero good faith in their criticisms
cptowers.bsky.social
yeah you're a weirdo, I don't want to talk to weirdos with bad energy.
cptowers.bsky.social
Okay man you can go yell at someone else about this now
cptowers.bsky.social
nobody said it isn't an advantage at all.
cptowers.bsky.social
because nobody really thinks any of that stuff is *why* they were good.

Why is everyone forgetting that he's a big stinky cheater? Everything he's ever done is suspect and you can't talk about his "accomplishments" without mentioning that.

He was always a fraud.

Morgan Wallen is the biggest star in country music *and* has enmeshed himself in the culture wars, he’s gotta be wondering what more he needs to do to become their go-to for this kinda thing

Trevor Bauer just gave up 5 runs to Nippon Express' corporate ball team in a scrimmage...

Like, I know I should stop talking about him, but he just keeps giving us stuff to talk about.

this is such an exceptional book

Celebrate prime day by buying my book from Bookshop dot org (with free shipping and a little discount) or your fave indie bookstore.

Fuck Jeff Bezos, books don't need him.

a book, with a blue cover and gradient red to yellow font that reads the dad rock that made me a woman by Niko Stratis. it's sitting on a wooden tabletop, behind it are records and a lamp and whatnot.

if all it took to be good was "prime randy moss" the Raiders wouldn't have traded him, y'know?

EXTREMELY different jobs, especially in 2025.

This is true but I also don’t like him so it’s funnier to pretend he was Mr Bean in a cut off hoodie and Tom Brady was calling audibles out of play calls like “tall man MUST touch down”

Bill Belichick won 10 games with Matt Cassell and then made the playoffs with Mac Jones, so I don't think the UNC thing necessarily proves that he was always a fraud, like some folks are saying.

I think it proves he is *currently* a fraud, though.
cptowers.bsky.social
I mean, he's one of four coaches ever to win 11 games with the Browns, and one of the other ones was the guy in the 40s that they subsequently named the team after.

I'm not saying the Cleveland stint is some huge feather in his cap, but some context is helpful.
bonesito.bsky.social
He sucked before and after his time with the Pats. Even when Brady wasn’t playing he had a positive impact on the roster… the 2008 roster was insane and the 2021 team got destroyed in the wild card round.

I’m not saying he sucked the entire time but the non-Brady evidence is extremely thin.

I think every loathsome, successful person should get an era at the end of their career where they’re still loathsome but no longer successful. It's good for public morale.

disagree, we’re taking away one Super Bowl ring for every game he finishes under .500 this year

it was very funny to read an article the other day and realize he has multiple sons working for him now

So: Let this be a lesson to everyone in sports media who will work to rehabilitate Jon Gruden's image when he eventually gets hired by some desperate college football program. That may not be the wagon you want to hitch your star to.
cptowers.bsky.social
What I don't think this is is a Jon Gruden situation, where his subsequent coaching experience does actually raise questions about whether he was ever worth the hype.

I think Bill Belichick is just washed.
cptowers.bsky.social
Yeah, just a total miscalculation by a guy with an ego too massive to accept his limitations. And it's very funny to watch!
cptowers.bsky.social
But I think the likeliest explanation is that he was a great coach in his prime and is a significantly less great coach outside of his prime.

Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers all had pretty embarrassing moments/seasons outside of their primes, too.

Back on the other site, people got really mad at me for pointing out (accurately) that Derek Jeter is uncool.
cptowers.bsky.social
Also: THAT’S the near-100 mph pitch he homered off????
cptowers.bsky.social
Genuinely shocked Judge has never hit a homer on a 100 mph pitch. 75 players have done it since he entered the league, which isn’t a ton, but still, Judge isn’t one of them?
jamessmyth621.bsky.social
on the Aaron Judge home run off the pole:

99.7 MPH is the fastest pitch he's ever hit for a homer

1.2 feet is the furthest-inside pitch he's ever hit for a homer
