I would get sworn in on a copy of the Lord of the Rings
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

I will raise my hand and swear on my cat that my only motivation for suggesting this is helping people preserve as much personal history as possible: we run no advertising and have no investors to care about metrics, so us hosting your backup does nothing but COST us (a very tiny bit of) money.

THIS. Medical professionals shaming ANYONE, even anonymously, for seeking medical care for a thing society already treats as a punchline further stigmatizes and disincentivizes people seeking medical care! I know of an instance of a responsible, safe toy designer HIMSELF, who KNOWS the rules --
I might be the Too Woke Friend here but as someone who has done chaplain care with people who have things stuck in their butts in the emergency dept I don't actually think it should be a journalism thing.

It's really traumatizing for people! And it shouldn't be traumatizing to make a sex mistake!

i would run away from any actual interaction, my two captive audience celebrity not-interactions

1) flight from miami and don francisco of sábado gigante fame was walking down the aisle shaking hands and kissing babies
2) in line at the edison and ford winter estates museum in fl with vanilla ice
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Please Quote this with your most minor celebrity interaction

re: What's an insult you'll never forget?

as a teen i got called an ice queen by a friend of my then-bf, to my face, and i don't know that he really understood it was an insult? or was just happy to tell me. was probably the first time i understood how my social anxiety came across to (some) people
I wrote a DC comics character in a way that I guess didn’t line up with how someone remembered that character from when they were young so they said that I had skullfucked their childhood.

One thing that absolutely definitely happens for real in the academic job market is that when you do not get a job, the Dean calls you and explains why you didn't get it. This is extra-super true when the explanation is something legally actionable on its face.
You’ll never guess who else experienced ‘racism’ on the job market despite their unimpeachable academic credentials.

The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.

i was reading this at the bus stop and having complicated feelings about it, and the bus came and i got on and sat down and i noticed the guy next to me was watching tiktok (you know, like everyone on the bus), and i glanced over, and it was a jamelle bouie video

so ok universe you win this time
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

I mean we are absolutely in a place now where the only solution to this information disorder is for everyone to constantly evaluate the source of information. Never trust a chatbot, but also don't believe a video unless you know and trust where it comes from.

Unfortunately... that's a lot of work.

Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

Let me tell you a story. Perhaps you can guess where this is going... though it does have a bit of a twist.

I was poking around Google Scholar for publications about the relationship between chatbots and wellness. Oh how useful: a systematic literature review! Let's dig into the findings. 🧵

gah this reminds me, i had an inhumanly itchy and huge rash (but weirdly not around my incisions 🤪) that took two rounds of methylprednisolone to get under control after, presumably, smth they prepped me w/ for my last surgery. never had a reaction like that before and still dunno what it was from 🫠
I'm allergic to iodine, for example, so we have to use chlorhexidine to prepare the surgical incision site instead

There is a very good reason why the thing I say most consistently about situations like this is "the violent rhetoric policy is my least favorite policy to write and enforce, and the policy that creates the most upheaval among the userbase when it is applied"!
"bluesky will suspend you for anything vaguely resembling a death threat" is maybe the single most consistent moderation policy they have I don't know why anyone is surprised by this one

yes, even if it's a reference to song lyrics
