The extreme warmth of the North Atlantic in 2023 is largely due to a reduction in low-level cloud cover. This implies decreased atmospheric subsidence followed by a potential low-level cloud & SST positive feedback. 🌊🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Weather and climate research funds are being “chainsawed” from NOAA's budget. Last I checked, Louisiana & Florida, which are maximally susceptible to Hurricanes, voted Red in the last General Election.

Wondering if residents there knew in advance this would happen.

Just heard @petebuttigieg.bsky.social characterize the difference between 8 million and 8 billion as 100,000%. That’s one way.
I think most people (myself included) don’t have an intuition for orders of magnitude (e.g., the difference between millionaire and billionaire).

One way to appreciate this is time, since we all experience it. Here's the difference between a thousand, a million, and a billion seconds.

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach.

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important:

Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

Been watching #Shogun on DisneyPlus @filmandseries.bsky.social written by the Australian British writer James Clavell. The @barnesandnoble.com 1997 wallchart has Japan’s timeline start in 1723. Story starts in 1600. It’s all very interesting. But I’ld love to see the Japanese perspective.
