My biggest motivator for finishing my book is so I can finally talk to people about the maelstrom that’s existed in my head for 10 years without having to open the conversation with a long, drawn out rant.

They can read the rant first, THEN we can talk about it.

The most realistic villains to write are just selfish jerks.

I know critics want depth and uncomfortable relatability, but "dude just wants wealth and power, and is willing to step on others to get it" might be the most relevant to reality villains in existence.

“What did you do?” Dhaval’s whisper was right at his ear, weak with horror. “You—what did he do? Why?” It hurt to speak, but it hurt worse to be this close to another person. His spine tried to crawl its way out of his body; his skin needed peeling off every place that felt his touch. Ciarán trembled with everything that was broken inside of him. “He deserved it,” he managed on a breathy exhale. Dhaval’s hold shifted—magic sparked over his skin, and Ciarán nearly vomited all over both of them. It had taken Ciarán a while to figure out what that magic was, hours spent watching the Hero Reels. Eventually, Ciarán figured it had something to do with strength—either Dhaval was super strong or he could manipulate the things he touched. Ciarán felt that touch now, that magic sparking, digging into him, making his blood swirl with panic, and spots dance before his eyes, dizzy and nauseated. Dhaval’s voice was soft against his ear. “I can’t let you go now. That’s murder.”

I’m missing too many steps for any of this to add up properly.* And too many memories, which was the other half of the problem. *If I could remember what happened to me the night that I broke my neck, that’d be a start.* Except that if he did get the memory of those missing hours back, then he’d also find out what had happened to the person he’d apparently drunk from. *Archer said that there wasn’t enough blood for me to have actually exsanguinated anyone. And he wouldn’t lie about that… would he?* Except that he’d lied about Fest being a sorcerer. Or, at least, known he was one and deliberately not told him, which was practically lying by omission. And Sabbat had said that he’d made a habit of that, and of thinking that he knew what was best for people. *And if I had a half-hysterical student panicking at me and wanting reassurance that they’d not just murdered someone, I’d probably tell them they hadn’t whether I thought they had or not, especially if they couldn’t remember anything.*

A bit of a longer one, because it's a two-in-one! My take on the twins, Deimos and Phobos, sons of Ares. In the modern day... they play a lot of online PvP war games 😂 I think they won't make the final draft... but I like them a lot.

Phobos smiled, his teeth mausoleum white. "Apologies, Eros, I'm just excited to see you! It's almost like you avoid us." He was bouncy and excitable, almost disgustingly so. The idea of casual murder appealed to him as much as a bubble bath or a room full of puppies. Over the millennia his skin was darkened by the sun, and his hair bleached nearly white—he loved prancing through the ancient battlegrounds, re-living his glory days where he could touch their father's enemies with his greatest gift: fear, panic, and the desperate attempt to flee from battle. He had been glorious at his job. These days he didn't get to use his powers as impressively, and he took out his frustrations with this injustice on the online gaming community, especially the war games and first-person shooters where he and Deimos could dominate the arena. "I do nothing of the sort," Eros said cooly. "Liar." This was Deimos, coming into the kitchen and edging around the back of the island so that Eros had to decide which brother to keep his eye on. They always did this—the old tactic of surrounding the enemy—and it annoyed the shit out of him. Deimos looked more chaotic than Phobos—so pale that the veins at his throat and wrist colored his skin, his hair black as Nyx herself—but he was the calmer of the two. Eros thought it was because Deimos was evoked before a battle. He brought despair and terror on mortals in the tense days, hours, or moments before—urging them to betray their fellows and their country. To leave, to run, to desert everyone and everything. He put the fear of Hades into them, promising a painful death on the battlefield unless they fled. Together they were horrors, a perfect accompaniment to their father as he waged wars and fought bloody fights in his war chariot with his fire-breathing horses.

From my enemies to lovers draft. The Hero watched his partner die at the Villain's hand; he wasn't able to save her or stop the Villain. This was Day One on the Job for them!

I'm hoping to write this twice, actually, one from each MC's POV, like concurrent chapters.

It had taken all of five minutes to get the message—a bank robbery on the other side of town. Ramona had been a distraction. Dhaval was furious. His motorcycle wasn’t fast enough to drown out the rage that snarled through his heart. But then— he was only a kid. The boy in the vault with the curved smile that was beautiful and hateful and full of poison. The boy with the smart-ass mouth and the pretty pale eyes that held more anger than Dhaval thought possible. It had stopped him in his tracks. Who had approved this kid? Dhaval thought it was a mistake, until later when he’d learned that, yes, the Council had given the kid permission based off Kellen’s request. The Council chose the Heroes, but the Villain chose their successor. Dhaval was too shocked to properly react, and that had cost him. The boy got away, leaving blood trails into the street, and Dhaval failed the first time he’d ever been asked not to lose. Sports and games were in the past—losing there meant bruised egos and disappointed friends. This was a different kind of self-loathing that he’d never known himself capable of.

From the first chapter of my ... I don't quite know what it is. Modern gods? A coming of age? An adventure? Romance? It's got too many words, and it's nowhere close to being done. San is my MC, and they have a sweet, fat cat named Edgar Allen Purr. There is also, later, a dog named Puppy.

I just finished The Atlas Complex and, to be honest, I have no clue how I feel about it.

Do you ever feel that?

I can never (usually) ‘review’ a book until a few days afterward, maybe months. It has to sink in. I have to mourn the loss.

Anyone want to share their thoughts?

Damen and Laurent face opposite directions, showcasing their disconnect, yet both remain inside the cage-like window space: laurent on a red fabric, and damen, reduced to his new position on the ground. The regent's red curtain frames them, and on the stained glass, two birds dream of soaring in the sky. Damen is mostly in the shadows, the light on his back only a memory, while Laurent, while still under the light, has the inevitable looming shadow of his elaborate cage over him. Though Laurent holds Damen's golden leash, the chain silently binds him, too. Damen and Laurent (with longer hair due to their journey) face the same direction, their goals finally starting to allign. On each side, swords and war maps dictate the path ahead while both are lost in a now-common, yet borderline special ceremony between them; the undressing of laurent, either of his clothes or his emotional armor against damen, while damen gets lost in the action, a representation of his slow, newfound appreciation for Laurent as the individual he comes to know. Instead of a cage, their shared tent: a fragile construction between them. All that separates them from the fire and freedom is a delicate veil now. On the table, a glass of wine sits alone, a representation of their tentative intimacy in this moment of their relationship. Laurent and Damen during the okton - both in the light, their flags sitting together covering each other's back. An activity where they both compete for their own glory, but finally face it as kings, here doubling as a representation of their last stretch towards their common goal: a fierce struggle where the earth rises, but does so under their power and speed; if it might get out of their control at times, it is something they will face side by side as equals.
