here is my story about how Zohran's focus on community amid the loneliness epidemic helped young people connect their politics to an organizing infrastructure, that interviewed ZM, and does not use the NYT's framing of "they don't know how to make friends" :-) and also ran 4 days before NYT's lol
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

The majority of our newsrooms are cis-white serving. And what we actually need for journalism to be effective and for people to care about it is for it to be everyone-serving.
I spent the 2010's arguing with my white colleagues that we were facing a crisis in newsroom diversity. The smart, dedicated, talented cis white journalists I thought of as my friends didn't want to hear it. Most of them ignored me. At least one of them told me to go to hell.
The only thing I can say about this paragraph is read it. Sit with it. Read it again. @michaelharriot.bsky.social

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

I want to add some context to this piece: The Office of the Pardon Attorney at DOJ is notoriously, indefensibly stingy with clemency recommendations. Biden was forced to go around it because otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to make a real impact with his commutations. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

I’m sad to learn that my law school classmate, Kiah Duggins, died in the DC plane crash last night.

Kiah was an exceptionally talented civil rights lawyer and aspiring legal scholar.

I hope you’ll read about her work and the causes she cared about, some of which I’ll 🧵 below.

What an immense loss

i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

This could have easily been written about the journalism industry
Hollywood vowed to change after the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and the protests that followed. So what happened to those DEI efforts? “It not only didn’t change, but in some ways it kind of got worse,” says Justin Simien.

Apparently this is a controversial view now, but I agree with the NYT editorial board that Tom Daschle should have paid taxes on his private equity consulting work.
This is how the NY Times treated Obama nominees in 2008. Compare to how it treats Trump today. Legacy media is broken.

"Mr. Daschle, who failed to pay $128,000 in taxes, primarily for personal use of a car and driver provided to him by a private equity firm for which he consulted."

This is frustrating (the coverage, not Jong-Fast's response), and partly why I think people are turning away from cable news in droves. Not every answer is a quick soundbite and to interpret someone saying they need to process their thoughts as being "stunned" or "speechless" is asinine.
I want to write about something very stupid that happened to me yesterday. I don’t want to do it in a self-serving way but I do think it illustrates a good point. As the pardon news broke I was asked a question about it and I didn’t have a clear answer so I just said I had to think about it.

Elections do not—cannot—act as a substitute for criminal prosecution of a single person. That’s not what they’re meant to do. A campaign is not the same as an evidence- and rules-bound trial. The voters are an electorate, not a jury, and someone who runs a law blog should know the difference.
