NEW: GLOBAL RENEWABLES OVERTAKES COAL

How the heck did that happen so quickly?!...🧵

We are in the foothills of a solar-wind-battery civilisation. This is our best chance of avoiding catastrophe. But it threatens the profits of fossil fuel companies & nations - so these are pouring money into right-wing populism to stop the transition. This seems to me the biggest story in politics.

Don't sleep on the good news. This quarter, China will sell more electric cars than the US will sell all cars of any kind (EVs or gas-guzzling pick-up trucks).

The rise of EVs in developing countries from Nepal to Costa Rica is an extraordinary story. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Critics of renewables often point to land use as a reason not to invest in wind & solar. Land use IS a real issue for all energy assets incl renewables (unless on-site).

But what critics conveniently forget is the huge land impact of fossil fuels. Aerial view of fracking sites in Wickett, Texas. 👇

It's absolutely astonishing: In just about 13 years, Norway has skyrocketed from virtually no sales of zero-emission battery electric vehicles to nearly 100% of all new passenger car purchases.

China's ICE new car sales peaked in 2017.
Seven years later, they had fallen by 48%🤯

Exactement ce que certains préparent en France en bloquant les ENR:
Quand la demande va enfin décoller, nos factures feront de même si nous avons bloqué solaire éolien et stockage.

Blink and you'll miss it. The EV revolution is taking off. 🚗

Even high growth rates provide small increases early on. Then it happens all of a sudden, all at once.

"0.3 per cent of the world’s land area – yes, just the land – would be needed to meet the current energy demand from solar alone, which is LESS THAN THE CURRENT LAND FOOTPRINT OF FOSSIL FUEL INFRASTRUCTURE."
Why solar power is the only viable power source in the long run
Not only is solar more than capable of supplying all the world’s energy, in the long term it is the only power source that won’t fry the planet

China’s NEV surge is dismantling the old guard. Aug: 1.08M retail, 1.3M wholesale. By Dec, 2M in a single month is in sight. This isn’t incremental—it’s a #lithium-fueled supercycle that’s crushing ICE economics, rewriting auto history & powering the fastest energy shift humanity’s ever seen. #EVs
China NEV sales rise to nearly 1.4 million in Aug as exports double, CAAM data show
BEV sales in August rose 40.5 percent year-on-year, while PHEV sales grew 7.5 percent.

China is scaling energy storage capacity faster than the rest of the world.

In just three years, 🇨🇳 TRIPLED energy storage to 135 GW—supercharged by the growth in lithium-ion batteries which overtook pumped hydro in 2024🔋

Entre janvier et juin, la Chine a installé plus du double de la capacité en énergie solaire que l’ensemble des autres pays du monde. Et je ne suis pas sûr qu’on prenne la mesure de ce qui est en train de se jouer. 1/..
