I suggested the same to some friends when I saw a professor with no expertise on the topic publish a paper defending that it is "an important question". I was told, "This is an important debate! You shouldn't dismiss it." My literal answer "So mathematical formulas deserve personhood now? "

Robot personhood / rights is a sci-fi trope because it’s an obvious way to do a story about prejudice against other humans, but I wonder if it’s created a cultural expectation that this *has* to be a debate once you’ve invented robots you can talk to
