Salmonscape
California’s Central Valley Chinook salmon are landscape makers. As they migrate through the state's water projects, they have an indelible impact on the watershed.

The National Science Foundation fired all its experts.

The National Science Foundation. Fired. All of its. Experts.

And they weren't even told to! The leadership worked toward the Fuhrer and went beyond the cuts demanded of them in anticipation of many, many more firings—up to *half* its staff.
“NSF fired about 10 percent of its staff at the end of Tuesday, removing 168 people who included most of the agency’s probationary employees and all of its experts, a class of contract workers who are specialists in niche scientific fields.” — www.politico.com/news/2025/02...
‘Cowardliness at the top’: Science agency staff revolt over cuts
At an emotional meeting, foundation officials announced layoffs for about 10 percent of their workforce and warned of more firings to come.

The thing about destroying NIH is NIH’s scale in medical research just dwarfs everyone else.

For ex, in 2023 the American Cancer Society gave out $64.5 million worth of grants. Sounds big, right?
But NIH’s budget was $49 billion. With a B.

Kill NIH and the floor drops out of US science.
HHS might as well be wrapping a wire around a piece of metal and running a current through it and see what happens.

Also, even a temporary or partial interruption in NOAA/NWS 24/7 lifesaving services--which are often used in an hour-by-hour (even minute-by-minute) context--would have this effect. The NWS is a critical public utility and it would be extremely difficult to rebuild if torn down.
