An NSF postdoc was offered to my son at the #1 US university math department in his field, but he no longer trusts the funding. He will instead take a position at either IAS and Princeton or more likely in Europe at ETFL. Trump’s recklessness is causing a scientific #braindrain
My son was expecting news on an #MSPRF #NSF grant. They told him applicants will be notified at 3pm today! Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships support emerging leaders in mathematics & statistics by funding research that will significantly influence scientific development.
Also have program officers sent out any news to MSPRF applicants about when they plan to announce awards?

Just got my measles vaccine!

I got my first before 1968, so it turns out I needed a new one.

The measles outbreak is ongoing, be careful out there!

So busy lately I've been remiss in sending Friday #flu updates. This has been the most severe season in years. But it's well off the peak & no sign of late season flu B activity. Another 8 pediatric deaths were reported to #CDC, bringing the 2024-25 total to 159 to date. www.cdc.gov/fluview/surv...

It's only the end of March but already 2025 has logged more #measles cases than all but 2 other years since the US achieved measles elimination status in 2000.
#CDC reported there'd been 483 confirmed cases in 19 states as of 3/27. Likely out of date, with TX reporting Friday its count has hit 400

Federal officials cited the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in halting the research. But much of the work was focused on preventing outbreaks of other pathogens.

This is why we fund the National Weather Service and emergency management.
Last night a tornado hit a trailer park just miles from where I used to live. In Talladega, a bus was thrown into the roof of a high school. Several schools in the path would have been out on the roads at Prom if not for the warnings of the National weather service last night. Thank NWS.

Zeynep Tufekci's lie about the context of the cancellation of the EcoHealth Alliance NIH grant in April 2020 is particularly shameful given the current climate.

It was an arbitrary political decision. At the time, the reason was working with WIV, and not "risky research". ▫️1/6

How many signs of democratic collapse do we need?

A push to impeach judges not for misconduct but defying Trump? Refusal to honor a court order to turn around planes? Trump invoking the Alien Enemies Act outside wartime? A budget clearing him to ignore Congress? Jailing students?

The list goes on.
