Credit Default Swaps are back en vogue? Party like it's early 2008, I suppose.
FT: Morgan Stanley "previously recommended investors buy credit-default swaps on Oracle, but hedging the exposure with long positions in its bonds.

".. They’re now recommending that investors ditch the bonds and simply go long Oracle CDS .."

What a movie. Lost its way a little toward the end, when things became crazy unrealistic, but overall, brilliant. A towering, era-defining, landmark film.

My based-on-nothing assessment of Trump's endgame here: he thinks this show of fleece will scare Maduro into some kind of deal, which Trump can claim constitutes total "victory!," and that will end it. Just seems consistent with how Trump approaches things, see, e.g., the single bomb drop on Iran.

I've got a Pynchon novel somewhere (I think it's a 9/11-themed book). Every time I glance over and consider starting it, I think, "ehhhhh, nah, another time."
Unpopular opinion: Light, later Pynchon is better because his forced zaniness is just fucking intolerable for 700 pages at a clip.

Right. I mean, if DOGE *didn't* save the gov't money, then what purpose did it serve? Because the program came at a significant cost (explained below). Seems like a huge net negative program.
DOGE was a failure if the goal was saving money. It was a huge success if the goal was giving a bunch of techbro adjacent people unfettered access to govt data in ways that, thus far, are evading the Privacy Act.
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Did Mamdani "butter up" / flatter Trump? I'm confused about what happened to prompt Trump's behavior in that weird presser.
I’m not even saying flattering Trump to butter him up is a bad tactic. It obviously works a lot of the time. We also know it’s obviously not an available tactic for most Democrats, because you’d nuke them from space. Yes, you.

I do think Obama's election—far more than the Clinton era, when the militias started up—is the "big bang" event for the #MAGA movement. I remember a @nytimes.com article on the eve of the 2008 election, where a white southerner kicked the ground and said, "Aw, we're never gonna elect a black man."
November 22, 2025 at 3:37 PM
Maybe that's it, but wow, that'd say something profound about Donald Trump's genuineness (or lack thereof) and how political wins have shifted. Just a year ago, #Democrats were supposedly in the early stages of a looooong era wandering in the wilderness, directionless and leaderless and rudderless.
Whatever’s convenient — at any particular moment.

This press conference was a telling episode about Trump's authoritarian disposition. Reporters shouldn't ask "insubordinate" questions and they should make sure a certain % of coverage is favorable to a given politician. If they violate these rules, the network should lose its license. Good grief.
