I have a book coming out in October about Florida's decades long battle for voting rights for people with felony convictions

It's an extremely hopeful but ultimately infuriating saga that I reported for years.

Preorder your copy today for Independent Bookshop Day.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

Feds planning big things in Florida, among other places.

"The request asks for space in 21 cities including ... Florida cities Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Sunrise, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Naples"

The only city that voted for Trump in 2024 on the whole 21 city list is Naples.

Hard to think of a more anti-human sentiment.

Reminder than Miami passed a ban on this practice back in 2016, a measure that was sponsored by GOP Mayor Francis Suarez when he was a commissioner. Many cities in FL had it on the books.

(An appeals court ruled the FL bans were unconstitutional in FL, GA and SC before this Supreme Court case)

If you're in Miami, don't miss Daniel Rivero (@danielrivero.bsky.social) at Books & Books (@booksandbooks.bsky.social) with Ana Sofia Pelaez this Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:00pm. Rivero will discuss his new book, JUST FREEDOM, which examines the battle to expand voting rights in Florida.
This is a promotional graphic for an author event. In the right hand corner, a headshot of author Daniel Rivero appears in black and white. Directly beneath Rivero’s photo, a headshot of Ana Sofia Pelaez, the moderator for this event, appears. Text in this graphic reads, “Books & Books Presents Daniel Rivero, Thursday, October 9, Coral Gables, 7pm, Moderated by Ana Sofia Pelaez” in white, red and yellow colors. The book cover for “Just Freedom” by Daniel Rivero repeats in a slanted row in the bottom half of the graphic.

It was never these activists' intent to enter Israel, I don't really know what the right word would be but "deportation" muddies the waters of what really happened when they were intercepted in international waters and *brought* to Israel by the military

israel said they have deported greta thunberg and the other 171 activists that they wrongfully detained while delivering aid to gaza. deporting activists doesn’t stop the message, it amplifies it.

NEW: Second, expanded TRO issued in Oregon case challenging Trump's National Guard deployment to the state bars any state or D.C. National Guard being deployed to Oregon.

Update at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com/p/judge-bloc...
[Update, 11:45 p.m.: By Sunday night, a second temporary restraining order was issued in the case, barring the Trump administration from sending any National Guard federalized under 10 U.S.C. 12406 to Oregon from any state or D.C. The move followed actions by the Trump administration overnight to send members of the California National Guard to Oregon and plans to do so as to the Texas National Guard as well.

At a hastily called hearing on Sunday night, Immergut harshly questioned the Justice Department lawyer before her, Eric Hamilton, asking him — while noting that he is an officer of the court — “Do you believe this is appropriate way to deal with my order?”

Issuing the second TRO in as many days in the case, Immergut called the Trump administration’s actions in apparent response to her first order “in direct contravention” of it.

The feds really want to invade Oregon with militias from other states and as this thread shows they are trying to exhaust and confuse the courts enough to let them get away with it.

All things literally unimaginable a year ago, 10 years ago, 50 years ago, etc..
joshuajfriedman.com
Judge: That's what I'll do. Prohibit federalization or deployment of any NG troops into Oregon. For all reasons in prior opinion. Deployment of federalized military is ultra vires and contrary to law, violating Title 10, section 12406. I also find it's likely that defendants violate 10th Amendment.
danielrivero.bsky.social
This. If military forces of one state are invading another state we are only the "United" States in name, not in fact. The point cannot be emphasized enough.

we simply do not have a union anymore if the president is using troops from one state to invade others entirely on the basis of political disagreements

UVA Faculty Senate passed a resolution strongly opposing the Trump “Compact.” We, at least, remain committed to the historic values and mission of the university.
Resolution Opposing the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education"
WHEREAS the United States Secretary of Education has requested that the University of Virginia enter into a “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education”, and
WHEREAS the Compact contains provisions antithetical to the mission and traditions of the University, and
WHEREAS the Compact contains provisions which endanger the independence and integrity of the University, and
WHEREAS the compact likely violates state and federal law, and infringes upon the constitutional rights of members of the University community, and
WHEREAS the University of Virginia exemplifies American academic values of the highest standard, including universal right to free speech and the cultivation of academic freedom; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of Virginia firmly opposes this Compact as written and calls upon Interim President Mahoney and the Board of Visitors to also reject this Compact outright as well as any similar proposal compromising the mission, values, and independence of the University.

Reminds me of the Haitian militia leader under the Duvalier dictatorship ... who sold Haitian blood plasma to the US (no one could say exactly where he got the blood but thousands of people were dead/missing).

Earned him nickname "Vampire of the Caribbean."

He received asylum and died in Miami.

Tomorrow will definitely be a day to watch. Feels like pressure is building for people like Meloni, who doesn't want to deal with Gaza, but the public keeps forcing her to do something about it.

She even sent a ship to "protect" Italians on the flotilla, and now this. Makes her look weak af.

I’ve been following Palestine protests for a long time. I could be wrong, but this feels different. Protests in Italy are big and numerous. General strike already declared for Friday.

Loads of protests planned in the UK.

Spain, Greece, Germany, Belgium, Sweden either already happening or planned.

Surreal moment for America. Needless to say, if the normal police ever pulled something like this — pulling every single person out of an apartment building and handcuffing them to run warrant checks — they would be sued into oblivion.

Yet ICE is going to get away with it entirely.
"It was scary, because I had never had a gun in my face," Fisher said. "They asked my name and my date of birth and asked me, did I have any warrants? And I told them, 'No, 'Ididn't."
Fisher said she was handcuffed before being released around 3 a.m., and she was told that if anyone had any kind of warrant out for them, even if it was unrelated to immigration, they would not be released.
