I argue that LLMs are the opposable thumb of computing:

fundamentally novel range of motion that, when combined with the error-correcting fingers of conventional computing, change what's possible altogether

LLMs: the opposable thumb of computing
Amidst all the hype, all the skepticism, all the rending of clothes, I am here to tell you: the LLM is to computing what the thumb is to our hand.

yeah it’s funny because software developers wake up every week with some subtle new extraordinary power, and they can just have it if they want

And a huge number of them are like “I don’t want this actually”

I just read the most tedious lamentation for the end of Old Programming

and to me it's like being seated in the cockpit of a jet and being sad no one wants your horseshoes anymore

i like this website where we fundamentally agree on 95% of a thing but the normal approach to the other 5% is “are you a fucking imbecile? are you having a stroke? are you illiterate? you piece of absolute shit”

this feels like the corollary to we need Mamdani in NYC and an oyster fisherman in Maine and a midwestern dad in Minnesota.

we're supposed to be the party that embraces the fact that we're a diverse and chaotic nation, stop test-polling yourself to generic national oatmeal!!!

It's interesting seeing the different ways resistance has formed in different cities. Los Angeles Organized, Chicago Radicalized, and Portland Got Weird as Fuck. All 3 have had success unifying their respective cities.

I guess my point is there are multiple paths to ungovernability.

If the argument is, "Well it SHOULD have collapsed if not for all this pesky demand and business going on in there" then like... IDK champ?

If the argument is, "The way they're financing these things seems bad," then I'd like folks to elucidate what we should outlaw.

it's wild to imagine all this airline misbehavior as a millennial

9/11 put the fear of god in all air travelers and it's clear that has totally faded
kashhill.bsky.social
This is absolutely wild. I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.

I still remember waking up at 7 AM at a snowy motel near Klamath Falls, OR, just as I ran out of money. February 2010.

I was driving a U-Haul to California for my first startup job, which I got thanks to twitter

I still feel the bullet whizzing past my nose on that one. so close to ruin!
daniloc.xyz
there's an alternate universe where I don't join twitter in 2008

and in that universe my life is completely unrecognizable, and shitty

jobs, friends, love, economic leverage, contributions to causes that matter to me...

it all emerged right there

Y2K was real. You weren’t impacted because the IT industry expended massive effort to update every piece of critical software that was written prior to the problem’s recognition.

Superb idea.
We could take a moment and remember the Y2K scam … and the one where when your phone stopped working they told you it was because your hand got sweaty …. Ah Tech they are such trickers
daniloc.xyz
They’ve been running this scam since 2017, and the media needs to be smarter about cornering them on it

any time there’s a question like this suddenly they’ve been in a cave with no cell service for 48 hours

I love how Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House and #2 in line for the presidency, is always like, “What? News?! I never read or hear anything that happens in the world, anywhere. I’m totally offline. What even is ‘social media’? They play news all day on TV!? Wow! That’s a surprise!”

Q: Do you agree that the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois should be in prison?

MIKE JOHNSON: Should they be in prison? I'm not the attorney general. I'm not following the day to day on that

"It cannot be the case that DHS officers are given carte blanche" to respond to protests with whatever force they deem necessary, Ellis says.

Ellis says that based on available evidence, it's possible that plaintiffs could show 1A and 4A violations by DHS.

i think it is cool that a government run by fanatical bigots is on track to plunge the economy into a mountain and cause a food crisis
ddayen.bsky.social
So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

People once again need to internalize that "generative AI" is a small subset of machine learning, that machine learning is a critical tool that you cannot run a site without past a certain volume Bluesky has long since exceeded, and that it is FAR more reliable than user reporting.
daniloc.xyz
to be clear I’m not sure this is a good thing! Are we prepared for the category of accessible automation that’s about to emerge here?

what are the security implications? The social impacts?

no fucking idea

I just know the “AI is useless and doesn’t work” opiate dipshittery didn’t help at all
