The first paper from my PhD is now out in @aslo.org Limnology and Oceanography Letters! We used nine years of daily temp and chl data from Peter, Paul, and Tuesday Lakes to show that aquatic heatwaves increased surface chlorophyll concentrations during 24 out of 29 events.

A boat sits on the shore of the heavily forested Paul Lake. The water is still and the sky is completely clear with the sun beating down on the lake, reflecting off the water. The boat has two oars and is prepared for someone to hop in and go sample the lake.

It was a bittersweet farewell to UNDERC this week as I finished the final field season of my PhD. I’m grateful for the science I got to do as part of the Cascade Project and the wonderful people I’ve gotten to work with. I’m excited to see what comes next! @ndfieldecology.bsky.social
Two researchers stand on a dirt road between Peter and Paul Lakes. The lakes are surrounded by forest and there are white clouds in a blue sky.

"We conducted extensive monitoring prior to the removal of invasive rats and they weren't detected at all. We believe a small population held on all those years and then, without invasive predators, it finally had the opportunity to recover & grow its population."

Scientists stunned by 'remarkable' reappearance of species thought to be extinct: 'One of the most historic comebacks ever'
Thanks to successful conservation efforts, the leaf-toed gecko was found alive on the Galapagos Islands for the first time in centuries.

ID Help: This specimen was found in a stormwater management pond (SWMP) in Ontario. It was found at 1-m depth, but given the dynamic water-levels of SWMPs, it could be an emergent plant rather than a submergent (which is what we are focused on). TIA for ID help. Cc @jolatimore.bsky.social

The result of nearly two decades of work, my coauthors and I have just described two new crayfish species from western North America: introducing the Misfortunate Crayfish and Okanagan Crayfish (doi.org/10.11646/zoo...). More to follow soon, but it should be open access - message if you need a PDF.

Tonight I got to hear El Niño and La Niña! Faculty and students from @uwmad-aos.bsky.social and UW’s School of Music collaborated to turn #climate data into beautiful music. Different notes represented peaks and troughs. Musical dissonance was disagreement between climate models and observed data

You recently obtained a Ph.D. or are currently a postdoc, do not live in Canada but are looking to move to Canada? You are interested in watershed-scale carbon storage and transport? There is an oportunity to apply for a 3-year PDF fellowship in my institution (Université de Montréal), get in touch!
Calm lake surrounded by hills. The sky is blue, with a few clouds, and is reflected on the lake surface. The soft light indicates that it is likely the end of a nice summer day. How much carbon is stored in such a landscape?

Got to visit the Cedar Creek LTER this week! I jumped at the chance to contribute to their chronolog of this spot by Fish Lake—you can never have too many lake photos! Now home to @ntl-lter.bsky.social

My #MacrophyteMonday plant is coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum)! This aquatic plant is a common and beneficial part of #Michigan #lake communities. It is sometimes confused with invasive Eurasian milfoil, but is easily distinguished (1/n).

NTL LTER samples 11 lakes year round and the data are publicly available! Seven lakes are in northern WI and have been monitored since 1981. The other four lakes are in southern WI and have been monitored since 1995 (although some records are 100+ yrs!)
