Just got back from mapping Miocene-Pliocene sed rocks and fault blocks in West Turkana, Kenya with my great colleague @danpeppe.bsky.social.

Here's the border fault separating Early Miocene strata (our focus) from the Turkana Basin. Image faces north. Losidok peak barely visible in the distance.🧪⚒️
Outcrops of red and gray sedimentary rocks on the left, and orange-beige sedimentary rocks on the right, separated by black lines drawn by me. Hills and a distant mountain (Losidok) are visible on the left, flat plains visible on the right. Desert scrub and acacia are present on the landscape. The left strata are labeled "Lothidok Basin, Early Miocene (18-20 Ma)". Strata on the right are labeled "Turkana Basin, ?Pliocene? beds".

It’s mostly harder - except the grants and course enrollment, which is auto-populated. Everything else is a PIA to upload and includes dropdown tabs and the like. It definitely took me less time to compile the manual fillable pdfs…

Same here - all submitted proposals are actually auto-populated by the university into our online annual review documents.

We didn’t include figures of any of the vertebrate material, but did publish an updated taxon list in the supplement here: dataverse.tdl.org/dataset.xhtm...

Question for anyone who does field mapping - do you have a preferred device for mapping & tracking exposures while in the field?

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS

We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees:

Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and…

1. Download your NSF award letters.

2. Print PDF your annual reports.

3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports.

NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

NEW: Thursday's massive National Weather Service layoffs included three employees at the Monterey office, which provides weather forecasts for nearly all of the Bay Area. One meteorologist, an administrative support assistant and a facilities technician were all fired with less than a day notice.

The Bureau of Reclamation office in Durango is on this list. It manages the dams in the San Juan-Animas-Dolores watersheds of the upper Colorado. (Vallecito, Lemon, Navajo, McPhee, Lake Nighthorse, maybe others that I can't remember)

Congress has just released a list of federal DOI offices to be closed under the ongoing massacre of our natural resource agencies -- it's extensive and includes many important NPS, BLM, USGS and USFWS facilities across the country. Truly horrific. democrats-naturalresources.house.gov/imo/media/do...

This includes the USGS Hawaiian and Alaska Volcano Observatories. HVO's Ironworks is a temporary space while a new facility is built to replace the Observatory critically damaged in 2018. Both groups are near their volcanoes. Neither has anywhere to go and both have been forbidden from telework.

Just got this passed on to us, about the damage at NIH's home campus -- the largest biomedical research institute in the world.

"The articles on cuts and damage assessments are largely grants focused. The grants program is a bit easier to characterize because it’s visible outside the NIH..." 🧪

Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.

Very cool! Can’t wait to see what the pots look like! Good luck with the firing.
