👋 Hey!

I love data, water, food, and all the areas in between.

I'm a PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo. I post about science, grad student life, equity, and daily musings.

For over 15 years the McMaster Ecohydro Lab has awarded the #NobelPeatPrize to the authors of the best peatland or peat paper of the year.

It’s that time of year again where we review papers and finalize a list of nominees.

Do you have a fave paper for 2025 you would like us to consider?

“Wait,” I said, before clicking the link. “What does Google have to do with earthquake emergency alerts in Turkey?”

spoiler alert the answer is “giving us all a haunting glimpse into the privatization of science and emergency management”
Google failed to warn 10 million of Turkey earthquake severity
The tech giant said only 469 serious warnings were sent out ahead of the 7.8 magnitude quake.

“Amazon intends to build on the [10-acre wetland, in the middle of the complex], pointing out that it is a small, shallow wetland, not a major nature preserve.”

Except it’s widely known now that small wetlands play a disproportionately large role in ecosystem services!

In Indiana: "To bury the fiber optic cables connecting the buildings and to install other underground infrastructure, Amazon had to pump water out of the wet ground. One permit application showed that the company requested permission to pump 2.2 million gallons an hour, for 730 days."

Spent seven days on the West Coast Trail, hiking across incredible landscapes with amazing people.

I feel lucky to be able to immerse myself in nature and witness all the earth's processes around me. To be an earth scientist and be able to see and hear the earth is such a gift.
Photo of three women sitting around a fire. The picture is framed and the fire is mostly hidden by large pieces of drift wood. Danyka in her hiking gear and backpack, staring up at a large tree. Picture of someone's back, walking away from the photographer in a very muddy wetland, with short shrubs and trees. Danyka walking, back towards the photographer, on a coastal shoreline, where there are tide pools. A forest abuts the coastline and frames the right hand side of the picture.

I passed east of you! I took the I-90, going from Mt. Rainier to Grand Teton NP through northern Idaho/Montana.
danykabyrnes.bsky.social
Thanks Rachel! 😊

That was in Olympic National park! I wish I would have made it to Crater Lake. I decided to go east after Washington towards Jackson Hole/Grand Tetons instead of south. Still very beautiful, but I definitely need to get myself to Crater Lake at some point.

😊 Thanks Nate for the validation! It was a great trip, all of the ups and downs included, and the hard reset has been so nice!

It's a privilege to take this time off, but if folks find themselves in this position, I highly encourage the break.

I hesitated, worried people would question my "passion." But the goal of hard work is partly to enjoy what you've built! So, if you can, take the darn break!
danykabyrnes.bsky.social
I am giving myself space to reflect on what I want, away from others' expectations (perceived or real).

I am still burned out, but I can feel the space being made and excitement for my work creeping back in.

The past 6 years have been full of challenges, lots of caretaking, and burning the candle at both ends, trying (and many times failing) to keep the balls in the air.

I got some fresh snow in CO and I found myself giggling, as I floated through the powder and moved around the trees. Pure catharsis.
danykabyrnes.bsky.social
Been quiet on here lately. I have been intentionally carving out time post-PhD to have fun, take a breath, and finish up some remaining papers.

Started off the break with a cross Canada-US trip in my van to ski, hike, and camp, from Ontario through the Pacific Northwest down to Colorado. ⛷️🥾

I don't want people to miss the "no masks" part of this.

It's harder for communities to fight for their rights when people are sick. Protecting yourself and your community from COVID, flu, measles, and even colds makes you a threat to those trying to take away your rights.

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership.

When asked why I studied the US instead of Canada, my answer was always the same: the US had more data and better data management.

I am feeling devastated watching as agencies' websites go dark... I can't help but feel like the sheer loss of data will thwart the progress of our science.
