. @dartmouthears.bsky.social professor Justin Strauss and researchers from @uofwa.bsky.social and Williams College trekked the Canadian Rockies this summer in search of what could prove to be the earliest record of animal life on Earth. ➡️ bit.ly/4ioT9Nb

📸 Robert Gill
Justin Strauss and Akshay Mehra examine an exposed ancient reef high in Canada’s Mackenzie Mountains for fossil samples. Phoebe Cohen plans a safe route over the rugged terrain to the reefs with Justin Strauss and the team. Justin Strauss treks with postdoctoral scholar Meghan King and college sophomore Caroline Nadalin to a fossilized reef. Researchers hike down from the reef with backpacks full of rock and fossil samples.

Ever felt the ground tremble, creak, or groan? It turns out that small earthquakes in New Hampshire are somewhat common, according to @dartmouthears.bsky.social professor Leslie Sonder, via NHPR ⤵️
Felt the ground tremble? Yup, earthquakes in New Hampshire are somewhat common
While seismic activity is common, not all earthquakes are easily noticed.

Let's talk about Ernest Everett Just, a cell biologist who unraveled the mysteries of fertilization in spite of the obstacles he faced as an African-American.

Just's story weaves together good, rigorous science with racism & tragedy.

He was born in 1883 in seaside Charleston, South Carolina.
A scientist studies a research rig. He is pensive and contemplative, with his chin on his fist, observing.

He's a handsome young man wearing a suit and tie, with closely cropped hair.

The other thing I wish I could tell everyone is that the machine learning is more specifically a parallel Bayesian inversion via MCMC (Metropolis modified with a form of "parallel tempering"), but that's trickier to explain so I'm worried folks are assuming we're using neural nets or something silly
