Senator Cory Booker has started his 19th hour on the Senate floor during his filibuster.

"I don't understand how we can be a nation with so much wealth and abundance and we haven't figured out a way to design a system where, when you invest in the wellbeing of people, people thrive."

Bravo, Cory!

Booker: "I confess that I have been imperfect. I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I've confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'"

Or, rather, pretends to be to his supporters.

How many signs of democratic collapse do we need?

A push to impeach judges not for misconduct but defying Trump? Refusal to honor a court order to turn around planes? Trump invoking the Alien Enemies Act outside wartime? A budget clearing him to ignore Congress? Jailing students?

The list goes on.

There's a phenomenon that seems, if not unique to America, uniquely bad here--the confusion of wealth with intelligence, moral virtue, and merit in general. And it isn't just the wealthy who confuse this in themselves. People from all socioeconomic strata seem to be similarly confused.

90% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die from the disease. That's why the medical community is excited about the results of a small trial in which nearly half of the pancreatic cancer patients who received an mRNA vaccine for the disease remained relapse-free three years later.

Fascism places emotion over reason. Words become just tools to achieve the vision of the Leader. In our post-truth world, this takes the special form of the inversion of meaning: fascists call other people "fascists" and antisemites call other people "antisemites"

"I don't like politics"

...yeah, but you'll like dictatorship even less.

Easy for demagogues to stoke bigotry when the majority of people falsely believe they're an "endangered" minority.

Can relate.
The new normal is apparently waking up at 3am in a mild panic about the state of the country, then easing myself back to sleep by watching British panel shows.

That fact that roughly half those polled support banning slaughterhouses is both encouraging and depressing, the latter when one notes that all but 5% repeatedly choose to vote for slaughter with regular meat purchases. The cognitive dissonance is thick.

We’re about to find out whether there are any patriots among Republican Senators, or whether they’ll make excuses for the foreign-backed demolition of our Republic that is now plainly underway.

A Russian agent, a kiddy-diddling congressman, and a talk show host walk into a bar...oh wait, it's not a bar. It's the Oval Office, and they're in Trump's cabinet.

Watching this Trump cabinet come together reminded me of a Voltaire quote:

"I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: "Oh Lord, make my enemies ridiculous." And God granted it."

A great irony of our time is that the democratization of media seems to be a large contributor to the present crisis of political democracy. There is no longer any institution providing a meritocratic or ethical filter deciding who gets to have a mass audience for their opinions 1/
