My dad was at DC Jail for almost a year, then sent to southern VA, and then transferred to Seagoville, just outside of Dallas. Removing people away from where their families can visit and they can remain somewhat connected to where they live in no way prepares people to be healthy when they get out.

All Kansas prisons now prohibit programs like ours, which send donated books to incarcerated readers, & have banned print newspapers from publishers. For what? Vague claims about drugs on paper. Yet they can't & won't provide evidence. Basically: "Trust us, bro."

Contrary to what you may have seen in the Shawshank Redemption, its incredibly hard for prisoners in the United States to get access to books. I volunteered for a project like this in North Carolina and they are a real lifeline for very isolated people in terrible conditions.
