Visualizations from previous work with @rodlaje.bsky.social. The two output units in the top panel are driven by a chaotic RNN-and a small perturbation is injected at 0.16. In the lower panel the RNN is trained to "tame chaos"-creating a "dynamic attractor"-and a larger perturbation is injected.

Federal workers are speaking out on how the Trump regime is harming Americans:

"We stand here today at a moment of the greatest assault of our lifetimes on our freedoms. The US Constitution is being shredded... We are here to call on Congress to stand up and stop it."

Excited to announce that I'll be moving to the Univ of California Irvine @ucirvine.bsky.social next Spring!🌴

Happily, this is not goodbye to Japan as I'll continue my lab @RIKEN_CBS for some time.

Help spread the word: the new UCI lab will be hiring, DM or email ([email protected]) if interested!

To be clear, there are no data that provide a link between short-term use of Tylenol during pregnancy and autism. In fact, one of the best prospective studies w/ sibling controls, if anything, pointed to a protective effect for use less than 7 days

New book by Randi Weingarten
President, AFT

“They fear what educators do—the teaching of critical thinking, of honest history, of pluralism—because their brand of greed, power and privilege cannot survive in a democracy of diverse, educated citizens.”
Why Fascists Fear Teachers
Teachers are under siege not for anything they do wrong, but for what they do right.

Trump wants UCLA to pay $1.2 billion to settle allegations it violated civil rights law. I took a look at the more than 7,300-word proposed UCLA settlement. Here's the detailed breakdown of Trump's plan to remake one of the nation's top public campuses: www.latimes.com/california/s...

Very proud of my Brazilian heritage today.
(We went to celebrate at our favorite Brazilian restaurant where some menu items were unavailable because of the 50% tariffs Trump imposed to punish Brazil for prosecuting Bolsonaro).

New study by @brendannyhan.bsky.social, @jasonreifler.bsky.social & colleagues demonstrates that prebunking election fraud rumors — by warning about anticipated false claims & filling conceptual gaps that those claims exploit — helps to reduce belief in falsehoods: www.science.org/content/arti...

I think there must be a cognitive bias by which we assume that two scientific mysteries must somehow cancel eachother out (looking at you Dr. Penrose).

Wavefunction Collapse

xkcd.com/3134/
4-panel Comic. (1) STUDENT: If the wavefunction only collapses when I observe it, does that mean my consciousness affects the universe? (2) [Bad:] PROFESSOR: Yes, quantum entanglement proves that we all have souls. (3) [Good:] PROFESSOR: No, consciousness plays no role here. It’s just physical measurement. (4) [Chaotic:] PROFESSOR: No. The wavefunction collapses when *I* look at it because I’m a full professor. It won’t collapse for an undergraduate.

"On Aug 19, 2025, the gov filed a citation of suppl authorities requesting that NSF join the arguments raised in the government’s motion to stay the injunction. See Fed. R. App. P. 28(j). Bcs the gov has not moved for NSF to join that motion, we do not address the request here."
What does that mean?

This does have some good news, but it is unclear what this means for the affected researchers other than delay, uncertainty, and disrupted careers.
