otoh, he looks EXACTLY like a wanna be teacher's pet kiss-ass, and so we can be happy that God rendered him obviously dangerous, like the way a rattlesnake is equpped with the obvious warning of the rattle.

one could argue that the climax could be strengthened by putting it in the present, and not off screen, as it were, but on the other hand, one could argue that it's simply perfect, and that the sense of the hero's internal dislocation and loss is emphasized by things happening to him, distantly.

The third act is rue, woe, regret, and ruin. He is Oedipus/King Lear of the London new wave pubs of the late 1970s:
And so it's my assumption/I'm really up the junction."

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, etc.

The second act sees our tragic hero enjoying his Paradise, from which he will be ejected. It reaches a blissful summit with: "She looked just like her mother/If there could be another" But then, smash! Gone! Second act cliffhanger wreck: "And now she's two years older/Her mother's with a soldier."

For the rest of the first act, it's domestic bliss: Railway arms we're missing... love had got us hooked up... I got a job with Stanley. But then! First act climax brings profound change. He left the house for 11 hours, "she said she'd seen a doctor/and nothing now could stop her"

I hereby declare that Squeeze's Up the Junction is a perfect formally constructed miniature tragedy in three acts. It starts with precise scene-setting 'I never thought it would happen/with me and the girl from Clapham..."

thank you Dan, you're very kind. There are also a lot of tables at Dario, Small Hours, and Oro... this is a pretty magical food town, I do say!

when I started this little experiment in sending a weekly letter to my internet friends, I had no idea I'd be documenting my own ever unwilling, ever increasing exposure to other people's guns. it's honestly shocking, cumulatively.

same. or any of the chuckies, the hockey mask ones, or the Scream ones. Real lfe is very, and often to me, unbearably scary. Why would I want more of it? I mean, I'm happy for everyone else to partake, but for me in this nervous system, no.

Last night, despite the weather app and the completely clear sky, I determined: The trees are blowing in a way that feels like rain. I'm going to put the cover on the fire-pit and take the teens many things off the picnic table, I'll just feel better. And now it is raining!

He knows it. They know it. They've always known it. Amongst themselves, they joke about it. They tell stories about it. They swap advice on how to deal with it.

But most importantly, to everyone else, they lie about it.

MADELEINE DEAN: The president is unhinged. He's unwell

JOHNSON: A lot of folks on your side are too

D: Oh my god, please. That performance in front of the generals?

J: I didn't see it

D: It's so dangerous! Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing. You have a POTUS who's unwell.

I feel strongly that I saw Christian Slater reading poetry about rats at First Avenue, the rock club, once, but I can't find any record of that so I must be wrong. I mean, I'm trying to say that I'd prefer work by Christian Slater exclusively writing about rats.

My god.

“Watson said she saw agents dragging residents, including kids, out of the building without any clothes on and into U-Haul vans. Kids were separated from their mothers…’It was heartbreaking to watch…seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.’”

Good morning.

The government is shut down because Trump wants to act like a king and steal from you.

Democrats have no obligation to support a budget that funds the destruction of our democracy - and DOUBLES health premiums to fund a tax cut for billionaires.

wow. the NYPost "shootings" vertical is really... a condemnation of our time. and probably as good a snapshot as we could provide of this moment. it's like the whole country is Chekhov's gun, hundreds of millions of firearms, constantly going off.

anyway they're shooting us for our failures, like the way a baby cries when it's hungry/tired/got a finger stuck in a cuff/is teething, it's just a very incoherent and deadly expression of god knows what, except pain.

I do not think video games "cause" people to become mass shooters. I do think that kids who put all of their lives into video games aren't well, and the video games do not present an in-game solution to real-world problems. We are really failing this generation of kids.
