'Concern is indivisible and so is selfishness. A society which says 'to hell with famine and disease in Bangladesh, it's all their own fault, isn't it?' is extremely unlikely to balance this with compassion and justice for its own pensioners and its own low-paid' (Roy Jenkins, 11 March 1972).

'The most popular was an “Australian-style points-based immigration system,” with 46% support. The least popular was “Britain’s current immigration policy”.
Just one problem: Since leaving the EU, the U.K.’s immigration policy has literally been an Australian-style points-based immigration system.'
🚨🚨Major irony alert: Brits are pining for the pre-Brexit migration system.

The idea was that #brexit would give the UK back “control” of its borders and create a fairer system.

But the widespread perception is it didn’t turn out that way.🧵

If I have anything to wish you, your friends, your family, and everyone that you love, it is that you never in your life have to make a similar choice.
September 29, 2025 at 6:54 PM
Regardless of whether that was likely, or happened, or could have happened, that was the rationale, and it was real, and we knew about it. We acted in the way we did because we believed that one form of trauma might be better than another.

There is something missing is all this post hoc analysis, which is that, without lockdown, someone, somewhere, somehow, would have to have explained to tens of thousands of children that they had killed their parents and grandparents.
September 29, 2025 at 6:47 PM
There are many children whose education suffered under lockdown, and I would never wish to trivialise it- we are dealing, in schools and society, with its effects now. We will be for years to come.
September 29, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Please don’t tell teachers (who were not at home, by the way- I exposed myself to COVID every single week at school during the pandemic, potentially endangering my family by doing so) that they harmed children by somehow not turning up.
September 29, 2025 at 6:40 PM
This is a fallacy. It was made very clear to us at the time that the reason that schools were closing was that children might take the virus into their own homes. They were unlikely to die but clinically vulnerable people around them probably would.

So it begins… children were harmed by Covid and schools should just have stayed open: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Last year, Pet Shop Boys released a souvenir clip from their intimate show at ‪Funny Girls‬ club in Blackpool, in which the audience provided the vocals for "It's a sin". Some fans have made a video adding phone footage to PSB’s video of that performance, now available to watch on YouTube.
