#A-Haydn-A-Day is back! As before, I'm putting my favourite recording of each work on a playlist. It's more justified to call Haydn The Father of the String Quartet than of the symphony, as in this case he more-or-less invented the medium.

You're welcome, Fritz. So glad you got to enjoy it too!

Petrenko is so good at orchestral showpieces like this, and the RPO sound better than ever since he took over.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) film composer #BOTD
What?
Yes.
THAT Saint-Saëns.
Famous for his "Carnival of the Animals" and other concert works, he was the first major composer to write an original film score, for the 1908 THE ASSASSINATION OF THE DUKE OF GUISE.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

I'm Jewish. I'm also Mancunian.

Every other national party leader was interviewed by Laura Kunesberg during their conference.

Maybe the BBC thought as someone who also supports Palestine - I had nothing to say?

IMO The Miracle is even better than the Surprise, and still in many ways my favourite #96 on record.

Mine too, obvs. There are various ways to approach Tapiola, but for the sheer grandeur of its dark, fire-flecked magic, there's no one quite like Herbie.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Gibson by a short head of these four. I'd hope everyone also hears IMO the best En Saga (his first significant tone poem) and Tapiola (his last) on disc 🔥❄️🖤

Labour’s response to over 100,000 fascists in the streets of London is to appease them

Labour’s response to peaceful protesters demanding an end to genocide is to arrest over 1,000 people and now they are increasing police power.

Starmer is continuing the Tory project.

When Labour came to power last year it followed 14 years of Tory rule in which international monitors had issued stark warnings about the UK's "authoritarian turn" through crackdowns on political protest and migrants' rights. Starmer is continuing that project.
