Here's Part One of a piece I wrote recently for "First Frame," the magazine of the British Film Editors:
"What Happened to the Classic Film Score?"
I'll come back and post the rest of it in additional parts in the near future.

A birthday shoutout to composer Michael Giacchino #BOTD in 1967.
Since the early 2000s, Giacchino has been at the forefront of Hollywood film composers, writing the scores for over 50 movies.
His list of credits is wide ranging: from Pixar to MCU to comedies to dramas.

Here's Michael Giacchino #BOTD channeling his inner John Barry with his James Bond-inspired jazz score for THE INCREDIBLES (2004)
Director Brad Bird's first choice was Barry, who didn't want to be seen as just repeating his earlier Bond work.
And Giacchino delivered.

Michael Giacchino, #BOTD in 1967, got his start writing music for video games.
His styles range from jazz to orchestral. He's one of a few current composers carrying the torch of the traditional Hollywood film score, as he does so wonderfully in this scene from UP (2009):

A very weird detail in this WSJ story about Trump’s weaponization of DOJ and FBI:

“Trump occasionally reminds aides about an incident last year in which Trump cut his hand on Bondi’s large wedding ring, causing him to bleed.”

There are few artists who can be called "genius," but Jacques Tati #BOTD was undeniably one.
If you need an introduction, I'd suggest MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY (1953), and then MON ONCLE (1958).
His masterwork, PLAYTIME (1967), is without question one of the greatest films ever made.

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) film composer #BOTD
What?
Yes.
THAT Saint-Saëns.
Famous for his "Carnival of the Animals" and other concert works, he was the first major composer to write an original film score, for the 1908 THE ASSASSINATION OF THE DUKE OF GUISE.

Oh, and all of the films of Jacques Tati #BOTD are available to watch on The Criterion Channel.
On a personal note, Tati was a major influence during the start of my journey into movies and filmmaking.
Here's David Lynch on the genius of Tati:

Bon anniversaire, Jacques Tati! Born in 1907, few other filmmakers ever met Tati’s talent.

1967’s Playtime remains one one of the funniest films ever made. Equal parts clowning and critique of modern consumer culture, it’s an earnest reminder to take joy in the act of living itself.
